Woman fatally shot while getting into car in Chester

CHESTER » A woman was fatally shot as she got into a car in the city just before midnight Tuesday, police said.

According to a press release prepared by Capt. James Chubb, the woman was getting into a car in the first block of West 21st Street when several shots were fired into the car by an unknown assailant.

Tyazia McCray, 19, was struck several times, according to police, who reported that they had received several calls about shots being fired as well as calls reporting that a person was yelling, and that a dark-colored sedan was reported speeding off down West 21st Street. The driver of the vehicle, who was not identified, also was hit several times.

Officers were originally dispatched to the area of 22nd Street and Edgmont Avenue for a report of shots fired at 11:57 Tuesday.

Officers responding to the scene got a report of two walkin gunshot victims at CrozerChes­ter Medical Center. Officers learned that both victims had been shot in the incident on 21st Street and had been driven to the hospital by a family member.

McCray succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The second victim, a man, was treated for his injuries and was listed in fair condition. No arrests have been made. The fatal shooting marks the city’s sixth homicide of 2018.
