100 Years Ago – 1918:

Theodore Roosevelt, state Sen. William C. Sproul and Harry Lauder, noted Scotch entertaine­r, have been invited to attend an elaborate patriotic splurge at the Eddystone plant of the Baldwin munitions works. This rally will no doubt be one of the biggest patriotic outbursts of its kind to have taken place for many years, and it is expected that a quarter of million dollars’ worth of Liberty Bonds will be purchased as a result.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

The first possible clue to the identity of “Mary Brown,” Chester’s mystery woman who was baffled police by her apparent loss of memory and knowledge of her own name and origin, came today by police teletype from Allentown, where a woman matching her descriptio­n has been missing. The woman, who has been at the Chester Detention Home until Monday when she wandered away at a moment when the matron was in the basement, was still at large at noon today.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

The luxury liner Queen Elizabeth, purchased Thursday by a group of Philadelph­ia millionair­es, will be berthed at the proposed Philadelph­ia Marina at the old Gulf Oil Dock in Tinicum. C. Robert Mills, president of Tinicum commission­ers, said he had no official word on whether the ship will be berthed, but he didn’t think it would affect the township too much. “I think it will be just like another motel like the Internatio­nal Airport Motel,” he said.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Residents of Chester’s West End – enraged at their living conditions since Westinghou­se’s trash-to-steam plant opened last year – marched 9 miles from Media to the city yesterday to dramatize their plight. Members of Chester Residents concerned for Quality Living, led by the Rev. Horace Strand, capped their day by blocking the entrance of the plant at Front and Thurlow streets.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

Ridley Township will get $900 a month as its share of additional antennae to be installed on the communicat­ions tower behind the municipal building. Commission­er Margaret Keegan recommende­d approval of the agreement between American Tower Co., owners of the tower at the township site, and Metro PCS, which leases space from American Tower, for the additional antennae. The agreement the township has with American Tower calls for the municipali­ty to receive 50 percent of any rental the tower company receives.
