Forney goes the distance twice for Ridley

The outdoor track season may be young, but Ridley’s Zack Forney and Tony Graham, Haverford High’s Aiden Tomov, Chichester’s Da’Quan Granberry and Springfiel­d’s Owen Galligan don’t have to worry about qualifying for the District 1 championsh­ip.

They all did that Saturday at the Invitation­al.

Dan Whaley would be headed to districts, too, if The Haverford School was a member of the PIAA.

Forney won the 1,600 and 3,200 in district qualifying time. He also broke the meet record in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 24.16 seconds. He took the 3,200 in 9:42.06. Graham won both hurdles events. He took the 110 high hurdles in 15.29 seconds and the 300 intermedia­te hurdles in 40.08.

Tomov and Granberry went 1-2 in the 800 and qualified for districts. Tomov’s winning time was 1:59.37. Granberry finished in 1:59.57. Galligan captured the discus with a throw of 145 feet. Whaley won the 200 (23.00) and 400 (49.96). The 400 time bettered the district qualifying standard.

Cooper Driscoll of Strath Haven won the javelin and was second in both the shot put and discus. Andrew Elcock of Haverford was first in the 100 and second in the 200. Andre Dean from Chichester took fifth in the 400 and sixth in the 200.

Alton McKenley of Bonner & Prendergas­t won the long jump (20-11) and the Friars took first in the 4 x 400. Radnor won the 4 x 800. Marple Newtown’s Nick Delise won the pole vault and was fourth in the javelin.

Penn Wood and Chester turned in strong efforts at the Diamond State Relays.

Madda Ngaima won 110 high and 300 intermedia­te hurdles, and Taylus Gaymore, James Nmah, Tyshaun Truitt and J’Mar James also won gold in the 4 x 800 relay for Penn Wood.

Ngaima won the 110 hurdles in 16.21 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 41.81. The Patriots captured the 4 x 8 in 8:41.12. Penn Wood also was third in the 4 x 400 and fifth in the 4 x 100. Tayvan Williams took second in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump. Haverford

Malachi Langley highlighte­d a big day for Chester with a victory in the 400-meter dash (51.19). Teammate Lamaj Curry was second (51.68). The Clippers also won the 4 x 400 relay and Abdul Griggs was fifth in the 800.

Girls Track

Move over Alyssa Rudawsky and make room for Notre Dame’s Jessica Schneider.

Schneider won the 1,600-meter run at the Haverford Invitation­al in 5:06.97 to break the mark of 5:08.85 set by the Garnet Valley All-Delco in 2013.

Strath Haven’s Dana Hubbell had a huge meet. She won the triple jump (34-1), finished second and qualified for districts in the 100 hurdles (15.98) and was third in the high jump (4-10). The Panthers also were first in the 4 x 800 and Tess Bailey took second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 100 hurdles.

Garnet Valley had a good day, too. Riley Beebe won the javelin with a district qualifying throw of 105-10. Isabella Ha and Grace Zamrowski went 1-2 in the high jump.

Hannah Oropollo of Bonner & Prendergas­t won the pole vault. Teammate Hannah Bierling was second in the shot put. Springfiel­d’s Symphonie Blalock won the shot with a district qualifying heave of 33-9.

Ridley won the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400, and Paige Shaika was second in the pole vault and fifth in the high jump. Lindsay Sheivert of Haverford High won the 3,200 in 12:20.29. Teammate Brit Fiegler was third in the long and triple jumps.

Penn Wood and Chester brought home quite a bit of hardware from the Diamond State Relays.

Penn Wood won three of the four relay events and received a gold medal performanc­e from Kyra Carroll in the 800.

The Patriots took first in the 4 x 100-, 4 x 200- and 4 x 400-meter relays. Carroll won the 800 for the second year in a row with a time of 2:21.96. Fatu Seck was fifth in the 800 for Penn Wood. Fanta Konde was third in the 100 low hurdles, second in the 300 hurdles and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4 x 200 relay.

Also for the Patriots, Elicia Moore and Shaniyh Toodles finished second and fourth, respective­ly, in the 400. Both were on the 4 x 200 with Konde and Tatiyana Laylor. Simone Johnson placed second in the low hurdles and sixth in the intermedia­te hurdles. Kianna Elam took third in both the shot put and discus for Penn Wood.

Inicia Ferguson, Jiya Clayton, Danayzah Fitzgerlad and Kamani Johns of Chester were second in the 4 x 400. The Clippers also finished third in the 4 x 100 and fourth in the 4 x 800. Johns took fourth in the 400. Clayton was third in the 300 hurdles, while teammate Makyiah Poteat was fourth in that event and was on the B 4 x 400 team with Keiasia Kennard, Keila Archer and Simone Lawrence that took fourth.

Baseball

Bonner & Prendie scored five times in the top of the first inning and rode that fast start to its first win of the season with a 7-4 nonleague victory over Episcopal Academy.

John DeMucci delivered the big blow in the first inning with a two-run double. Jason Nihill added an RBI single later in the inning. Matt Shepherd went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. P.J. Tecco was 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.

Erik Lachette allowed five hits and one earned run over 4⅔ innings to get the win. Mike Standen pitched the final 2⅓ innings for the save.

Isaiah was 2-for-2 with one walk, one RBI and one run scored for EA. Mitch Pagano added two hits and two RBIs. ARCHBISHOP CARROLL 11, HAVERFORD SCHOOL 1 » The Patriots scored five times in the top of the second inning to break the game open.

Cole Chestnet slugged a 3-run homer and Chris Grill drove in four runs to pace a 10-hit attack. Alex Cornell tossed all five innings to get the win. He allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out four.

Sean Clark ripped an RBI, while Joe Bonini, Alex Andrews and Jesse Goldman had the other hits for the Fords.

Boys Lacrosse

In need of a goal in overtime with a manadvanta­ge, where else would Strath Haven turn but Jeff Conner?

Conner’s fourth goal of the game, ripped under the bar off a feed from Chris Rosini, gave the Panthers a 7-6 nonleague win over Downingtow­n East Saturday.

Rosini also scored and dished two assists for the Panthers, who got a combined 10 saves from Will Brake and Vincey Palermo.

In other nonleague action: SPRINGFIEL­D 7, LINDENHURS­T 4 » The Cougars got back to their stingy ways courtesy of seven saves from Jimmy Donegan and a 12-for-14 effort at the X by Zach Broomall. Kyle Long handed out five assists, and Mike Tulskie and Jack Spence scored twice apiece. BOYERTOWN 7, MARPLE NEWTOWN 4 » Liam Ferry made 10 saves, but the Tigers couldn’t get their offense on track. Colin Ferry scored twice, and Mike May and Alex Viola tallied a goal and an assist each.

At the Checking for Cancer Classic: ST. ANTHONY’S 16, HAVERFORD SCHOOL 5 » Luke O’Grady scored twice and TJ Malone paired a goal with an assist, but a sluggish start turned into an 8-1 halftime deficit and doomed the Fords at the invitation­al it hosts.

Girls Lacrosse

Goalie Jackie Lanzaiotto stopped a free position with 1.3 seconds left to preserve Notre Dame’s 7-6 nonleague victory over St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes.

Lanzaiott finished with eight saves. Hannah Gillespie led the attack with three goals and one assist. Kelly Coyle and Claire Gola contribute­d two goals each. Maggie O’Brien came up big with four draw controls. GEORGE SCHOOL 11, DELCO CHRISTIAN 1 » Maggie Tyson scored the only goal for the Knights, while goalie Isabelle Brewster made 24 saves.
