Why Pearl Kim would be best for Delco

- Michael Straw, Marple Ken Hemphill, Concord Regina Scheerer, Republican candidate for 165th Pa. House District

To the Times: Pearl Kim is the only one candidate in the race for the 5th Congressional District that stands out as someone I am proud to support. I believe Pearl Kim will support our county and municipalities while always putting the congressional district’s needs first before anyone else.

A vote for Pearl Kim is a vote for responsibility, energy, and a fresh perspective. She has already shown that she is ready to fight for Pennsylvanians with her work with the Special Victims and Domestic Violence Unit as a prosecutor. I know that when I cast my ballot for her she will not only be ready to represent our district, but she will be able to fight for our district.

I don’t feel this level of support for many of the Democratic candidates that are “front-runners” in their primary. After the actions of state Rep. Davidson for instance regarding two recent accidents with a suspended license and state Rep. Vitali’s complete 180 in regard to running for both Congress and the state House seat he represents, I have mixed feelings about the Democratic slate. These two candidates show a vote for either is a vote for irresponsibility and a lack of character.

This will be a pivotal election for the county where we will be losing a congressman who had built up seniority in Congress. I do not want to take a chance on having our new representative being irresponsible and embarrassing the region.

Thankfully, I don’t have to take that chance. I will be supporting Pearl Kim, who has proven to be more than capable of not only representing us but ready to support her constituents. being enacted by EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, the very man who sued the EPA 14 times as Oklahoma attorney general. You would think this crisis would be the main talking point in every Congressional campaign. Hardly. Only Greg Vitali has made the environment a top priority in his run for Congress.

Trusting science is an essential precondition for environmental protection. When the “Physicians for Social Responsibility and Concerned Health Professionals” concluded an exhaustive study that found irrefutable evidence that every step of the fracking process substantially increases risks for all kinds of health maladies (including cancer) via air and water contamination, Greg Vitali didn’t look to get a second opinion from Chesapeake Energy like so many of his colleagues in the state Legislature have done. Instead of accepting donations from polluters, he accepts the scientific conclusions produced by medical professionals. That’s why Greg fought to keep fracking out of our state parks and forests and why he would follow New York State’s lead in banning this dangerous industrial activity.

Greg was the first Pa. legislator to introduce climate change legislation. He’s supported, co-sponsored, and written dozens of bills to expand renewable energy and increase conservation in Pennsylvania. For each of the years it’s been published, Greg has received a 100 percent rating on the Environmental Scorecard put out by Pennsylvania Sierra Club, Conservation Voters of PA, PennEnvironment, and Clean Water Action. In his 25 years in the PA House, there has been no more consistent defender of our environment than Greg Vitali.

Greg hasn’t just fought to make the environment less polluted and safer for your children; he also fought the well-oiled Legislature in Harrisburg, which has been so polluted by fossil fuel money that he catalogued it in his recent report, “Marcellus Money in the Pennsylvania Legislature.” Greg’s report revealed this shocking fact: from 2007 to 2017, polluters have spent $67 million on lobbying and campaign contributions to the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

This is the reason why Pennsylvania is the only significant gasproducing state without a severance tax. It’s why we have a toothless, underfunded Department of Environmental Protection and why the Pennsylvania Utility Commission is a rubber stamp for polluters. It explains why an extremely dangerous high pressure “natural gas liquid” pipeline is being buried next to thousands of children’s bedrooms in Pennsylvania.

Greg has a proven track record of fighting corporate polluters and exposing their supporters in the Pa. Legislature, and he would bring this extensive experience to Congress. In the end, Greg thinks your kids deserve an unpolluted environment. If you think so, too, help him get to Washington. Why would I do this? In 2016, I campaigned with, and voted for, Alex Charlton, who ran as a pro-life, fiscally responsible Republican successor to our long-time Rep. Bill Adolph. He turned out to be the opposite! A Republican representative in Delaware County has never voted against a pro-life bill, but Alex Charlton did. He also voted against the Republican budget, and wants more taxes and government spending. His actions are inconsistent with the principles of the Republican Party and the expectations in our district. I intend to do better. I want to earn your trust and work for the people in this district – not for people with special interests and deep pockets who use money and power to prevent meaningful change. For the past 30 years, the voters in Delaware County have not had any choices in the May Primary Election. Now you do! For me, the three main issues are: Protect life; freeze taxes; and cut spending. I will vote for legislation that protects all human life. I will oppose any increases in taxes for businesses and individuals. I support an across-theboard reduction in spending in every department in Harrisburg, eliminating waste and fraud.

On May 15 you have a choice – give me an opportunity to represent you.

Vote for and nominate the true Republican, Regina Scheerer, for state representative in the 165th Legislative District. of the people
