It’s time for Right and Left to united behind president

- By Charles P. Sexton Times Guest Columnist Charles P. Sexton Jr. is a Springfield resident and retired chairman of the Springfield Republican Party.

This weekend we woke up and found that the United States, Great Britain, and France conducted a carefully planned missile attack on chemical weapon plants and storage facilities in Syria! This attack was in response to Syrian President Assad’s chemical attacks on civilians earlier in the week. I was glad to see that our Allies, Great Britain and France were participating in the attack.

I immediately had flashbacks to the 1940’s when we had Great Britain and France, and Russia as our Allies, we were at war with Germany and Japan. Of course we were very fortunate in that we defeated the enemy, and at the end of the war the United States, Great Britain and France were able to put Germany and Japan on a path of democracy! Today we have them as a partner in most world events. Russia is a different story, I can’t understand why they would not be standing tall with the United States, they have a serious problem with terrorism in their country! The United States of America stood tall with Russia during World War II, it is sad to see that they have what I call convenient amnesia!

I was born in 1936, the product of Catholic grammar School and public high school. I served my country as a United States Marine for three years and eight years as a Lower Merion police officer.

I grew up in America during its greatest days. It was a time in the country when there was not a Left or Right, it was Democrat or Republican. They fought hard, both sides, during the election period, they discussed issues, they had some strong debates! Both sides had respect for each other, the hatred factor was nonexistent! When the election was over the country, the state, the counties, the boroughs and townships would come together for the good of the communities! Both Democrat and Republican were not afraid to reach across the aisle and compromise and work together for the betterment of the nation.

I don’t care if you voted for Donald Trump or someone else, that fact is, he is the president of the United States, his office deserves respect. Does President Trump conduct himself the way I am used to seeing a president conduct themselves? No, having said that, I still respect him and his office as the leader of the free world. The extreme Right and Left are the problem, their conduct and disrespect for the office is destroying the Republic! I say to you, wake up, these are serious times.

We all must pull together and support the president, shortly he will be meeting with North Korea. It would be a nice message to send to North Korea, that Mr. Trump has the support of the American people. The Left is filled with so much hatred and worried sick that he may come out of the meeting with North Korea giving up their nukes! You say why? Because they are fearful, if he pulls this off he will be re-elected. That’s sick thinking but it happens to be true!

I am tired of hearing about Mr. Trump’s sex life, especially before he was elected as president. If he was doing it when in the White House, then it would be problematic! I was not a supporter of Mr. Trump, having said that, he has accomplished some major thing while in office.

Here is the bottom line, work with him, support him until the 2020 elections, then if you don’t like him, vote for his opponent! Show the world powers that Americans have each others’ backs, do it the Marine Corps Way!
