100 Years Ago – 1918:
Federal agents, it was learned yesterday afternoon, will within the next few days commence a “round up” of all income and special tax delinquents in Delaware County. Not only will those who have failed to file income tax returns be sought by the government men, but all persons subject to a special tax such as brewers, rectifiers, whole and retail liquor men, oleomargarine and adulterated butter dealers, dealers in filled cheese, manufacturers of mixed flour, brokers, pawn brokers, ship brokers, proprietors of theatres, circuses, public exhibitions, bowling alleys, billiard rooms, manufacturers of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, owners of pleasure boats and all other things taxable under the War Revenue Act.
75 Years Ago – 1943:
Work on the new pipeline which will carry 1,000,000 gallons of water daily from Media to Chester will start about May 1. The pipeline, approximately 3,000 feet long will extend along Moore Road to Rose Valley road, where it will connect with the Media system.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission has approved part of the Chester School Board’s plan to end public school de facto segregation. The approved section, creating three “Community Schools” for all fifth and sixth grades, is scheduled to go into operation this September.
25 Years Ago – 1993:
An agreement has been reached that could lead to the construction of an off-ramp connecting Chester’s downtown business district to southbound I-95, U.S. Rep. Thomas Foglietta announced. The ramp would be off Edgemont Avenue across from the Howard Johnson’s at 13th Street and pass over railroad tracks owned by CSX Transportation.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
Villanova University once again found itself the epicenter of national politics when Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, stopped in for a live broadcast of MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” on Tuesday, just one week before the April 22 Pennsylvania primary. McCain, coming off the most detailed economic speech of his campaign earlier Tuesday in Pittsburgh, fielded questions for a few minutes at a pretaping event for the press before moving on to Villanova’s Pavilion, already packed with supporters wearing “Hardball College Tour” hats and whooping it up for the big show.
