Books sales around county set for upcoming weekends

SPRINGFIEL­D » Friends of Springfiel­d Township Library holds its spring book sale in the Springfiel­d Township Building, 50 Powell Road, from Saturday, April 21-Monday, April 23. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; noon-3 p.m. Sunday; and 9 a.m.-noon Monday, April 23.

The library asks all new donations for the next sale be held until after May 7.

Media-UP hosts sale

MEDIA » Media-Upper Providence Library, Front and Jackson streets, holds Spring Book Sale from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 21-23. The upcoming sale features all kinds of books, movies, music and more. Highlights of this year’s sale include a large selections of cookbooks — including Italian, Asian and vegetarian — and classical music CDs. Special items include unusual, collectibl­e and antique books for sale on the second floor.

On Saturday, most items are $1-2. On Sunday, all items except specials are half-price. On Monday, it’s $5 fill-a-bag day (bags are provided) for regular items, and half-price for specials.

In preparatio­n for the sale, the library has temporaril­y stopped accepting donations and ask that additional book donations be held until May 1.

Vendors wanted at Folcrft Library

Book and bake sale May 5 at Ridley Park

RIDLEY PARK » Friends of the Ridley Park Library hold a book and bake sale from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Ridley Park Borough Hall, 105 E. Ward St. Adult fiction, non-fiction, mystery and children’s books and adult fiction books on tape are available for sale. Baked goods, raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets can also be purchased. Raffle prizes are donated by local businesses.

There is also a shredding truck behind borough Hall. There is no charge for this but donations are gladly accepted. The time for shredding is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Donations of books less than 10 years old in good condition and DVDs and children’s books may be brought to the borough hall from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, May 3; and 10 a.m.-noon and 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 4. Come out to learn these essentials: How credit plays a factor in homeowners­hip, the ongoing costs associated with owning a home, planning for the mortgage process, determinin­g how much house you can afford, and more. Clarifi is a non-profit community resource devoted to lifelong financial literacy.

Eastern State history at Haverford library

HAVERFORD » The Haverford Township Free Library, 1601 Darby Road, Havertown, hosts a program on the history of Eastern State Penitentia­ry at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25. Library staffer Scot Oldham, who previously served as a docent at the historic site, is the presenter.

Eastern State Penitentia­ry was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including “Slick Willie” Sutton and “Scarface” Al Capone. No registrati­on required. The library hosts Walk With Ease, the Arthritis Foundation’s evidenceba­sed program for people 60 and over that is proven to reduce the pain of arthritis and improve overall health, from 10:30 a.m.-noon Monday-Wednesday through May 23. No matter if participan­ts need relief from arthritis pain or just want to be active, the six-week program teaches how to safety make physical activity part of everyday life. The program is proven to reduce the pain of arthritis; increase balance, strength and walking pace; and build confidence in the ability to be physically active. Children’s, adult programs at Norwood

The Norwood Sister Circle hosts “Democracy Is Not A Spectator Sport - Vote!” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at the library. This program is presented by the League of Women Voters of Delaware County to help citizens of Delaware County exercise their full voting rights in the May primary election and the November general election. During this presentati­on, guests learn about the voting registrati­on process, absentee voting, important state and federal offices up for election and what and how their functions affect people’s daily lives. ‘Peeps Show,’ TV trivia at Ridley Twp. Library

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP » Ridley Township Library, 100 E. MacDade Blvd., Folsom, the entrees are in for the library’s its first ever Peeps Show. Voting for a “Peeples Choice” winner in each age category is now on through April 29. The contest features shoebox-sized diorama of Peeps — the marshmallo­w candies — based on a book of the contestant’s choice. Age categories are 11 and under, 12 to 17, and 18 and over. with prizes awarded. Winners are announced on April 30.

The library hosts a “Golden Girls” trivia game at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28. With all female leads, none under the age of 50, “The Golden Girls” defied Hollywood odds and became one of NBC’s biggest network hits of the 1980’s. Play as an individual, or on a team of up to four to go through five rounds of trivia. Cheesecake bites, coffee and tea are served. This program is free. Busy spring at Chi and Hook

Upper Chichester Library and Mary H. Campbell Library, 10th and Green streets, Marcus Hook, hold their final children’s storytime event with the Chichester Rotary Club at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the Campbell Library. The Rotary has funded story times at the libraries as part of the Pennsylvan­ia One Book, Every Young Child early literacy initiative. The book selected for 2018 is “My Cousin Momo” By Zachariah O’Hora.

Visit the Mary H. Campbell Library on Wednesday when a Chichester Rotarian volunteers to read and a library assistant creates a special craft with the children. Friends of the Upper Chichester Library hosts a Victorian Tea Saturday, May 5, from 1-3 p.m. at the Creekside Village Clubhouse. For a $25 donation, supporters receive an assortment of teas, finger sandwiches, scones, desserts and song stylings by Tracy Mace. Proceeds fund library operations.
