Mark calendars for plant, pottery sales in May around county
PROSPECT PARK » The Prospect Park Beatification Committee holds its annual plant sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Gazebo in Park Square, between 9th and 10th avenues. The event is rain or shine.
The sale features flower flats, hanging baskets, vegetable and herb plants, and perennial garden divisions. Proceeds benefit the committee’s community gardens, Curb Appeal Awards Programs, and holiday community events sponsorship.
Pottery sale May 3-6
NETHER PROVIDENCE » The Potters Guild’s annual spring sale offering handcrafted functional and decorative pottery opens in The Duke Gallery at Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, with a preview party from 6:30-9 p.m., Thursday, May 3. Party attendees have the first chance to purchase the original pottery made by professional guild members. Admission to the preview party is $5 and includes refreshments. The sale
continues all weekend from May 4-6. Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission and parking are free and the Duke Gallery is handicapped accessible.
Shoppers can purchase a variety of pottery created by the skilled ceramicists of the Potters Guild. Items available for purchase include everything from fanciful figurines, sculptures, vases, tiles, flower pots, bowls, and mugs, to garden ornaments, small fountains, tea pots, tiles, clocks, decorative masks, and large serving platters and bowls.
“The Potters Guild Spring Sale is the perfect place to pick up a one-of- akind gift for Mother’s Day or any other spring occasion,” said Paul Downie, executive director of CAC. “More than just clay, each handcrafted piece also provides a link between the artist and buyer. We look forward to offering shoppers pottery fired in a variety of different types of kilns including electric, gas, raku, wood, and our soda kiln recently built by Guild member and CAC instructor Brett Thomas.”

DARBY BOROUGH » Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital continues its Dine with the Docs community question-and-answer series on May 15 with “One Stroke at a Time.” Participants hear from Ayesha Mahmood, MD, about the risk factors, warning signs and treatment of a stroke.
Strokes are a major cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The event will feature an informative lecture and interactive Q-and-A session with Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital Neurologist Dr. Mahmood, along with dinner. Participants receive a free stroke risk assessment from Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital’s stroke coordinator, also on hand to speak with participants about their assessment.
Dine with the Docs is an educational series designed to create an open dialogue between Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital physicians and members of the community about important health topics.

Senior Expo set for May 4
CHESTER » Delaware County Council and the Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) host their annual Senior Living Expo at Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack in Chester from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, May 4. The theme for the 2018 expo is “Celebrate Age — A Force Awakens.”
Vendors at the expo include home care agencies, physical therapists, nursing homes and life care communities, insurance carriers, government agencies, hospitals, and health care systems. The Delaware County Senior Games booth features Wii Bowling and interested Delaware County seniors age 50 and older may sign up for the 2018 Senior Games to be held from June 11-22.
Throughout the day, there are raffles donated by the vendors and sponsors. Pharmacists from PerformRx are available to discuss medications and interactions. The Delaware County Office of the District Attorney has a medication drop box available to dispose of any unused prescription medication. The American Red Cross offers sign-ups for free smoke detectors and installation. Mercy Health sponsors a live cooking demo with Executive Chef, David Judge preparing a Balsamic Chicken Sautee. There is DJ entertainment and photo booths. Local senior centers demonstrate or display a few of their activities and programs.
