Be a ‘superhero’ to children Sunday

EDGMONT » CASA Youth Advocates holds its third annual Superhero 5K Run and Walk at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 29, at Ridley Creek State Park. Runners

and walkers dressed in superhero costumes gather in support of CASA, a Mediabased organization whose mission is to champion children in Delaware and Chester counties’ child welfare systems.

“This is quickly becoming our favorite event of the year – it’s exciting to see everyone come out on a Sunday morning, put on a superhero costume, and show their commitment to being champions for children in their communities. All children need a hero, but abused and neglected children need a superhero,” said CASA Youth Advocates Executive Director Leigh Anne McKelvey.

CASA Youth Advocates recruits, trains, and supports volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates who work to ensure that abused and neglected children in Delaware and Chester Counties’ child welfare systems find a safe, permanent, and nurturing home.

CASA served 206 of our region’s vulnerable children in 2017, nearly doubling the number of cases served in the last ten years, yet that is still less than 20% of the children who could benefit from the support of a CASA volunteer. That’s where fundraising events like the 3rd Annual Superhero 5K Run and Walk play an important role.

Emmy Award-winning FOX29 News Reporter Chris O’Connell again joins the event to help kick-off the start of the race. “CASA Youth Advocates does some amazing work. They are the unsung heroes to our most vulnerable children,” said O’Connell. CASA is also excited to welcome newly appointed Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun Copeland at the race.

Each 5K registrant receives a T-shirt, refreshments, water stations, and prizes. The event includes awards for the top overall male and female race finishers, overall age group winners, best costume (for both humans and pets) and top sponsors. Timing and logistics will be coordinated by Bryn Mawr Racing Company.

Event registration is $30 for adults and $15 for children 7-17 before April 22; $40 for adults and $20 for children 7-17 after April 22, including the day of the race. All children 6 and under are free.

Registration opens at 8 a.m.; race starts at 9. The event is held at Pavilion 17 in the park, 1023 Sycamore Mills Road, Media.

There are awards for top overall male/female race finishers, overall age group winners, best costume (for both humans and pets) and top 1-3 sponsors.

See new take on ‘Little Mermaid’

MEDIA » There’s a new musical version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” at The Media Theatre every weekend through May 20.

Developed for children ages 4 and up, the 50 minute show features new songs, colorful costumes, and an opportunity for children in the audience to join the show on stage.

In this adaptation, Doria is the youngest mermaid who wishes to live on land. She wants to be more like the humans above. Her father, the humorous Sea King, understands she is unable to fulfill her dream but wants her to figure things out on her own.

She finally gets her chance to go to The Rock above land and see what life is like above the water where she rescues a group of sailors and one charming prince.

Songs include “The World Above,” “Mermaid’s Song,” “Beauty of The Sea” and more. The musical’s message is all about accepting who you are and is a reminder to appreciate the creatures of the ocean.

This production has no scary villain and is a great introduction to live theatre for small children. Roger Ricker appears as the humorous Sea King.

The play runs Sundays at noon through May 20. For tickets, visit mediatheatre. org or call 610-891-0100.
