100 Years Ago – 1918:

Fletcher Williams, a watchman, employed at the Price Leather Co., Tenth and Morton avenue, Chester, was beaten up at 1 o’clock this morning in the boiler room of the plant by two unknown men. He was found by the police and conveyed to the Chester Hospital where he received treatment for a badly lacerated hand.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

The 23 acres of Deshong Park will be added to the city’s recreation­al facilities. An agreement to that effect was passed by City Council at its meeting this morning. The park area will be administer­ed by the city’s Department of Parks and Public Property, where John C. Kane is the director. In addition the Deshong Estate also made a cash contributi­on of $750 toward the city’s recreation fund. The state will also maintain the grounds as heretofore, thus relieving the city of that financial obligation.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

As a facility for classrooms, the Spring Hill Farms needs some work. The three or four large, white homes on the 122-acre property in Marple must be renovated if the Delaware County Community officials go ahead with their intentions of buying the site for a permanent campus. But when it comes to atmosphere, few colleges could do better. The estate of the late Gideon M. Stull, head of a Chester industrial and farm equipment firm, offers natural beauty and a serenity and seclusion which lends themselves easily to study.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Two Showalter Middle School girls who had a disagreeme­nt were given boxing gloves, sent to an empty classroom and encouraged to settle their difference­s, the Chester Upland School Board was told last night. The girls were locked in the room and told to box on March 23 by a teacher who was the acting assistant principal at the time, according to parent activist Carolyn Mason. One of the girls administer­ed a thorough beating to the other but experience­d such psychologi­cal trauma in the aftermath of the fight she was committed to a psychiatri­c hospital for 20 days, according to the girl’s pastor.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

The new Chester Upland School of the Arts, set to open its doors in September, has received applicatio­ns from almost twice the number of students it can accommodat­e. “This is the first time in probably district history that we’ve had to institute a lottery,” said Superinten­dent Gregory Thornton.
