Mathes, Zimmerman go yard as Marple outslugs O’Hara

Two of Delco’s best baseball teams slugged it out Saturday.

Alden Mathes was 4-for-5 with a home run as Marple Newtown rocked Cardinal O’Hara, 18-8, to improve to 13-0 on the season.

Marple jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but O’Hara (9-4) struck for eight runs in the third. Jimmy Beaky went 3-for-3 with a long ball and Bryan Pazulski also went yard.

The Tigers answered with seven runs in the bottom of the third and never looked back. Tyler Bogan had a big day, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs. Reilly Fillman launched his first homer and was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Luke Zimmerman also cranked a dinger for Marple.

Sophomore Andrew Cantwell pitched 1.3 spotless innings of relief with three strikeouts to earn his first varsity win.

In other nonleague action: HAVERFORD SCHOOL 4, DEVON PREP 0 » Tommy Bagnell was in total control from the mound as the Fords won Game 1 of their Saturday doublehead­er. Bagnell pitch a fourhit shutout with four strikeouts.

Isaiah Winikur and Joe Bonini paced the Haverford offense with two hits apiece. Joe Meyer and Pat Toal each had a double and an RBI. HAVERFORD SCHOOL 10, PENNCREST 0 » Sam Chase threw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits, in his first varsity start. Logan Keller powered the Fords’ (11-7) 13-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBIs and three runs. Meyer blasted a two-run homer and Bonini had three hits.

Tyler Rossini hurled 3.2 innings of sterling relief, recording five Ks for the Knights (5-6). Paul Zappala (two runs), Mason Miller (two runs), Cole Palis, Reece Malek and Colin Robinson all smacked a double for the Jaguars. Jack Haveson tossed three solid frames with four Ks to pick up the win. MALVERN 5, EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 3 » The day started well enough for the host Churchmen, who grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Friars, though, plated a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

Mitch Pagano collected two singles and Jack O’Reilly went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for EA.

Softball

Kylee Guerrera’s stellar pitching Archbishop Wood to a 1-0 Catholic decision over Cardinal O’Hara.

The Vikings and Lions entered the day tied atop the league standings with one loss apiece.

Guerrera allowed only four hits and struck out 11 in a complete game performanc­e. O’Hara ace Jenna Smith scattered seven hits while striking out four.
