PW’s Ballenger blanks West Catholic on one hit

Sophomore Ameenah Ballenger made certain that Penn Wood’s first win of 2018 was never in doubt Monday.

Ballenger pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and was 4-for-4 with a three-run homer, two doubles and seven RBIs as the Patriots routed West Catholic, 16-0.

Ballenger received plenty of help from her friends, too. Favor Loughbenga went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Sallah Thollie (four RBIs) and Melanie Miller each chipped in with three hits, including a double.

In the Ches-Mont League: SUN VALLEY 10-17, OCTORARA 4-2 » In Game 1, Madison Koons paced the Vanguards with a homer, a triple and a double to go with four RBIs. Julia Skwrit and Amy Parker banged out three hits apiece.

The Vanguards carried their hot bats over in Game 2. Cassie Bridwell went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Maddie Gutowiecz, who picked up the win, homered and drove in three runs.

In the Central League STRATH HAVEN 13, LOWER MERION 12 » The Panthers and Aces combined for 25 runs on 29 hits. Haven held on to win the slugfest, with Emily Lesher (4-for4, two doubles, four RBIs, three runs) and Brooke Bender (3-for5, homer, two runs) leading the way.

Malia Calciano and Brooke Holsinger both collected three hits. Cayden Frazier was 1-for-2 with three RBIS, while Audrey and Grace Kochanowic­z each had a single and a double for the Panthers. UPPER DARBY 5, SPRINGFIEL­D 3 » The Royals broke out the boom stick in this one as Brooke Jones, Rylee Shanahan and Camryn Young all clobbed home runs. Young’s bomb scored three in the top of the UD the lead.

Rebecca Sorrentino was the winning pitcher. Jenna Casasanto and Abbie DeSantis had two hits apiece for the Cougars. PENNCREST 11, HAVERFORD 10 » The Lions (8-4) won a wild one under the lights when SJ Whittemore knocked in Abbi ALlinson from third base with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Collette Ernst (3-for5, three RBIs), Brett Gavin (two hits, three RBIs), Kira Sbandi (two hits, two RBIs) and Whittemore (two hits, two RBIs, two runs) all swung a hot bat for Penncrest.

Amber Moscoe’s RBI single in the eighth gave the Fords a 10-9 lead, and Morgan Marchesani ripped two triples for the Fords, who scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to force extras. seventh

Boys Lacrosse

Michael Porreca tallied three goals and three assists to help Interboro to a 15-6 triumph over Upper Moreland in a Pioneer Athletic Conference match.

Gaige Lennon (one assist) and Nick Mormando also registered hat tricks for the Bucs. Johnny Scibello pitched in with a goal and three helpers, while Brett McLaughlin and AJ Porreca tossed in two goals apiece. Connor Evans played well in the cage, making 10 saves.

In other nonleague action: HAVERFORD 19, EVEREST CANADA9» TJ Malone paired five goals with two assists, Scott Deck netted four goals and dished out two helpers, and Gavin Burke supplied four assists to power the Fords. Peter Garno chipped in with two goals and two assists. PENNCREST 9, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 7 » The Lions were the frontrunne­rs in a game that was originally suspended last week due to inclement weather. Max Daugherty and Matt Gress led the charge with three goals apiece. Ryan Metsinger had a goal and an assist, but was most valuable from the faceoff circle, going 13 of 20. Shane Stevens had a strong performanc­e in goal, stopping seven shots.

Girls Lacrosse

Keri Barnett’s five goals and one assist led Interboro to an easy 16-6 nonleague win over Collegium Charter.

Morgan Reed totaled two goals and three assists for the Bucs (12-2), who held an 11-1 advantage at halftime. Paige Dowart posted a hat trick and Marissa Mullan contribute­d a goal and four assists. Molly Dowling added two goals and an assist.

Girls Track

Strath Haven put the finishing touches on another perfect season in the Central League with wins against Penncrest (102.5-47.5) and Conestoga (12919). The Panthers won their 88th consecutiv­e conference meet.

Dana Hubbell bested the field in the 300 hurdles and triple jump. Grace Forbes anchored the winning 4 x 400 and placed first in the 800 meters for Haven. Julia Benner was first in the 3,200 and ran the second leg in the 4 x 400, while Jordan Brown was a double winner in the shot put and discus.

Penncrest’s Tara Higgins won the javelin and pole vault events.

Boys Tennis

Brandon Caban, Zoe Lor and Ani Gipia were victorious in singles competitio­n in Upper Darby’s 6-0 nonleague win over Academy Park.

The doubles pairings of Zach Thornton and William Scott, and William Lu and Hamza Butt both cruised 6-0, 6-0 for the Royals (6-6).

In the Del Val League: CHICHESTER 4, PENN WOOD 1» Cliff Passawe, Ricky Van Newkirk and Alec Lindley all won in straight sets for the Eagles. Penn Wood’s Christophe­r Jones gave Van Newkirk a tough battle in the No. 2 match.

Cameron Flanagan and Kyle Gallagher won their first match of the season at first doubles, defeating Steven Sav and Joseph Thollie, 6-3, 6-3. The Patriots won the second doubles match by forfeit.
