Hazardous waste collection starts

-

The first of four Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Events, offered by the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority, is held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Emergency Services Training Center, 1700 Calcon Hook Road, Sharon Hill.

Electronic items, latex paint, smoke detectors, and BBQ sized propane tanks are not be accepted at this or any 2018 HHW Event. Residents should take note that the authority can no longer accept electronic waste such as TVs, computers or anything with a cord at these HHW Events due to a change in state law.

Residents who have electronic or E-Waste to dispose of should contact their municipality to see if they are hosting an e-waste event, permanent drop-off, or curbside collection.

Latex paint is not considered hazardous and will not be accepted at any HHW event. Latex paint is any paint that can be cleaned up by using soap and water. Those who need to dispose of paint should visit www. co.delaware.pa.us/recycle for detailed instructions for the proper disposal for latex paint.

The May 5 collection is the first of four 2018 Household Hazardous Waste events where Delaware County residents can safely dispose of toxic products from their homes. Household hazardous waste products that will be collected can be found in the home in the bathroom, kitchen, living areas, garage, basement and utility room.

Items accepted include: Oil-based paints; sealers; thinners; turpentine; lawn & pool chemicals; 3 lb. (camp size) propane cylinders (20 lb. gas grill sized tanks can be taken to Hope Depot, Lowes or any propane supplier). Also accepted will be any items whose label contains the words “DANGER” – “TOXIC” – “HAZARD.” For a more complete list, visit www.co.delaware. pa.us/recycle/hhw.html

“The four events offer an easy and convenient opportunity to dispose of hazardous items in a responsible manner,” said County Council Chairman John P. McBlain.

County residents can take acceptable products to sites in the five-county area (Chester, Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties) as part of a coordinated Southeastern Regional Household Hazardous Waste Education, Collection and Management Program. There is no charge to residents to drop off the acceptable materials, however, businesses will be turned away.
