Restrictions in Haverford

HAVERFORD » Weekday lane restrictions are scheduled in both directions on College Avenue between Walton Road and Haverford Road on Monday, May 7, through Thursday, May 31, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for utility work and road widening. Traffic will be controlled by flagging.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the construction area because slowdowns will occur. The work schedule is weather dependent.

The operation is part of PennDOT’s $5.2 million project to replace the structurally-deficient College Avenue bridge over SEPTA railroad tracks and the adjacent culvert over Cobbs Creek.

PennDOT’s contractor is replacing the two-span concrete encased steel beam bridge with a one-span composite prestressed concrete box beam structure and constructing a new precast reinforced concrete arch culvert.

The project also includes improvements to the traffic signals at the intersection of College Avenue and Haverford Road, and the addition of left turn lanes on College Avenue at this intersection.

The new structure over SEPTA tracks will be 42 feet wide and 58 feet long. It will have two 11-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot left turn lane. It will also have a five-foot sidewalk on the west side of the structure and a two-foot shoulder on the east side.

The new concrete arch culvert will be 42 feet wide and 24 feet long. It will have two 11-foot travel lanes and a 10-foot painted center gore area. It will also feature a fivefoot sidewalk on the west side of the structure and a two-foot shoulder on the east side.

The existing two-span bridge over SEPTA was built in 1931. It is 42 feet wide and 63 feet long. The structure carries an average of 4,637 vehicles a day. The one-span concrete arch culvert over Cobbs Creek was built in 1924. It is 30 feet wide and 16 feet long.

Road-Con, Inc. of West Chester, Chester County, is the general contractor on the $5,240,145 project that is financed with 100 percent state funds. The project is expected to be completed in late June.

Bridge work in Concord

CONCORD » Motorists using U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Delaware County will encounter lane closures and periodic 15-minute stoppages next Wednesday night for beam placement on a section of the new bridge over Smithbridge Road.

The new bridge construction is part of the ongoing $62.2 million project to widen and reconstruct a U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to Clayton Park Drive.

Nighttime lane restrictions and 15-minute traffic stoppages will be in place at the Smithbridge Road overpass, located at about the mid-point of the 2.6-mile work zone, from 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 9, until 5:00 AM Thursday, May 10. The restrictions will allow crews to position equipment and lift and secure the deck beams for the eastbound section of the new bridge.

If weather forces cancellation of the planned operation, the beam placement and resultant restrictions and stoppages will take place from 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, to 5 a.m. Friday, May 11.

In addition, flagger-directed, alternating single-lane restrictions will continue on Mondays through Thursdays, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, through various work areas along the construction zone. These daytime and overnight operations will continue through late fall.
