Time to reclaim 5th District for people

- Kabeera M. Weissman, Swarthmore

To the Times: We all know that corporate interests disrupt our Democratic process and that profits to the 1 percent come at the expense of the people. The only way to get the health care we need, the education our young people need, the end to mass incarceration and environmental devastation and more is to say no to special interests in our elections and policies.

We need politicians who will be solidly for people, not corporate profit.

That is one of the many reasons I am voting for Molly Sheehan for U.S. Congress on May 15. Molly is an accomplished scientist, a mom, and a proud progressive. She is not beholden to special interests and does not accept corporate PAC donations.

Molly is a people’s candidate with loyal supporters across all three counties in PA-5 (Delco, Montco and Philly). She has earned support through close listening, accountability, and being in this race for the long haul (since before the map was redrawn, when the race was much harder to win).

Molly is principled and tenacious, and has the most thoughtful, progressive policy positions of any candidate in the race. She uses her vision and problem-solving, to map out real plans for change. We need this kind of fighter in Washington – a politician who pays more attention to the actual work of legislating than to fundraising and the re-election cycle.

Molly is for many progressive policies – single payer health care, $15/hour minimum wage, serious racial justice reform, bold climate change reform, universal pre-K, debt free college, and more. She will prioritize people and their needs and rights.

We have the chance to make history on May 15. Our PA-5 District is strongly lean-Democrat – the perfect race for a bold progressive. Molly stands apart for her truly progressive vision, uncompromising fundraising, and commitment to the people. Let’s send a message across the nation that the era of incremental change in the Democratic Party is over and the era of bold change has begun.
