Alice Barnett Dorezas Mahoney was born October 21, 1947. Alice passed away on May 4, 2018 after fighting a hell of a battle against Progressiv­e Supranucle­ar Palsy (PSP), a little known brain

Alice loved hosting family and friends for a fancy brunch or Sunday night dinner, with equal measure.

Alice was born in Norfolk, Va. to Julia and Lyndon Barnett. She attended Shippensbu­rg University and majored in education, after which she taught high school French in Hagerstown Md.

In the late 1970s she was named Director of Education For the Department of Army worldwide, becoming the first woman to hold that position. She also worked for Continuing Education Center in Cecil disease. County. Later she was a computer analyst for Avon and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Delaware. Alice was instrument­al in the implementa­tion of a 1986 State of Maryland program to provide car seats free of charge to any parent who needed one. She loved to travel and spend her time at her family’s fishing cabin in New Hampshire.

Her beloved husband, John Mahoney, survives her. Alice and John enjoyed a beautiful life together, sharing a love of travel whether on a cruise or long drives for an ice cream. She is also survived by her daughter Emily Dorezas and son-inlaw Al Samuels of Los Angeles, and her son Nathan and daughter-in-law Stacy of Bel Air, MD.

Emily loved her mom’s laugh and creative spirit. She is so thankful for her mom teaching her to have a strong independen­t will. Nathan loved her amazing integrity and devotion. Granddaugh­ter Andrea will always remember being scared in a thundersto­rm and snuggling with Grandma Alice. Grandson Dylan loved the scavenger hunt he did with his grandma. Alice is further survived by her mother Julia Barnett who among many things cherished her creativity and loved watching Alice come up with a costume or put a party together, her sister Susan Barnett Fox will miss going to NYC and getting lost in the magic of a Broadway show with Alice. Her brother John who will remember Alice’s bravery and sense of adventure as well as her courage while she fought PSP. She is also survived by her brother-inlaw, Billy Mahoney; stepsons Kevin Mahoney, John Mahoney and stepdaught­er Trish; her first husband Steve Dorezas as well as her nieces and nephews and cousins.

Her father Lyndon Barnett, Nana Ruth Barnett and Les Barnett, Dorothy and John Calvert Donaldson, preceded her in death.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Glen Riddle Residence, physical therapist Alison, and Heartland Hospice for their personal care, grace and kindness.

Services will be held on May 10th at O’Leary Funeral Home, 640 E Springfiel­d Rd, Springfiel­d, PA 19064. Visitation 2pm, Services 3pm-4pm.
