Djokovic loses, Nadal advances in Madrid

MADRID » Novak Djokovic added another early eliminatio­n to his disappoint­ing season, while Rafael Nadal continued to look invincible on clay.

Djokovic lost to Kyle Edmund 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 on Wednesday in the second round of the Madrid Open, the sixth straight tournament in which he has failed to reach the quarterfin­als.

Nadal later cruised past Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-1, extending his record of consecutiv­e sets won on clay to 48. The 16-time Grand Slam champion, coming off titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, has won 37 of his last 38 matches on the surface, including 20 straight.

Maria Sharapova made it to the quarterfin­als for the first time since January with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kristina Mladenovic.

NASCAR penalizes 3

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. » The teams for drivers Austin Dillon, Clint Bowyer and Daniel Suarez have been penalized by NASCAR after the race at Dover.

Bowyer and Suarez were each hit with $50,000 fines for their crew chiefs and both teams lost their car chiefs for the next two races for rear window violations. Each team lost 20 drivers and owner points. Bowyer finished second and Suarez third on Sunday at Dover.

Dillon, the Daytona 500 champion, had his team hit with a $25,000 fine to crew chief Justin Alexander and his car chief was suspended for one race.

Sweden, Denmark win

HERNING, DENMARK » Host Denmark upset Finland 3-2 as defending champion Sweden stayed perfect at the ice hockey world championsh­ip, shutting out Austria 7-0 on Wednesday for its fourth straight victory.

Olympic runner-up Germany rebounded from three straight losses to hand newcomer South Korea a 6-1 loss.
