Haverford School serves up another tennis title

The Haverford School captured its ninth consecutiv­e Inter-Ac League championsh­ip Thursday with a 7-0 victory over Malvern Prep.

In singles competitio­n, John Walsh, Julius Golz and Cole Wolf all won in straight sets. The top doubles tandem of Emilio Fink and Thomas Ward cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 decision. The second paring of Sunny Yu and Jared Hoefner battled to a 6-0, 7-6 (6-3) win. The teams of Ryan Astley and Aly Ba and Jeff Bozzi and Aditya Sardesai also picked up victories in doubles play.

In a nonleague match: HAVERFORD 4, ROMAN CATHOLIC 1 » The Fords (8-7) claimed their third win in as many days as Jamie Taglang kicked things off at first singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win. Connor Rose was a winner in straight sets at No. 3 singles.

In doubles action, Haverford received winning performanc­es from Sammy Ortiz and Scott Kaplan, as well as Michael Hughes and Samson Chen.

Baseball

A three-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning, aided by one costly Academy Park error, propelled Chichester to a 9-7 Del Val League victory.

Damian Thompson legged out a triple to start the Eagles’ rally. Dave Heffron and Jason Riberio each drove in two runs, while winning pitcher Anthony Caramanico had two hits. Ryan Boyers and Hunter Killinen both had an RBI for Chi (133, 11-3).

Rob Long belted a home run and Matt Thomas and Billy Martin both tripled for AP.

Elsewhere in the Del Val: INTERBORO 20, GLEN MILLS 4 » The Bucs needed only three innings to dispatch the Bulls. Jared Delliprisc­oli swung a big bat, going 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs. Dom Scrivano laced a bases-clearing triple and went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Evan Sorrentino finished 3-for-3 with a double and four ribbies.

Colin Shields pitched all three innings for the win.

In the Central League: SPRINGFIEL­D 3, HAVERFORD 2» The Cougars got off the schneid with a much-needed victory on senior day. Last season’s PIAA Class 5A semifinali­st hadn’t won since April 19.

Springfiel­d did all of its scoring in the first inning. Nick Sharer laced a two-run single and Justin Shields hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Colin Eberhardt pitched four solid frames and Mike Conran threw three innings of strong relief. Cam Thorpe added a single and a walk for the Cougars.

Pat Linder and Shaun Jones collected two hits apiece for the Fords.

In the Bicentenni­al League: DELCO CHRISTIAN 5, BRISTOL 1» Tyler Rossini dominated with 11 strikeouts and allowed only five hits and one walk en route to a complete game. Rossini also doubled and reached base three times for the Knights (9-7, 7-7).

Clay Corcimigli­a ripped a two-run triple to give DC a little breathing room in the third inning.

Softball

Brooke Jones’ run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Upper Darby to a 6-5 nonleague victory over Bonner & Prendergas­t.

Sara Sullivan set the tone from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-5 with a homer, double and four RBIs for the Royals. Winning pitcher Rebecca Sorrentino chipped in with a two-bagger.

Molly Muldoon paced the Pandas with three base knocks and two runs scored. Allison Martin and Meghan McNulty added two hits apiece, while Angelina Brooks smacked a double.

Despite the loss, Meghan Sullivan pitched very well for the Pandas. The senior went the distance, allowing only one earned run while striking out 10.

In other nonleague action: PENNCREST 3, CHICHESTER 2 » Maya Hartman settled in after giving up a home run off the bat of Ava Franz on the first pitch of the game. The All-Delco ace wouldn’t allow a hit the rest of the game.

Julia Eckels blasted a tworun dinger in the third inning for the Lions, and Colette Ernst followed with an RBI double. MARPLE NEWTOWN 2, INTERBORO 1 » Rachel Cowley’s single drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the third as the Tigers (6-11) upset the Del Val League champion Bucs. Maggie Colsher had a double for Marple.

Ceire Devlin-Mohan scattered four hits in a complete game effort. She struck out five.

In the Central League: STRATH HAVEN 10, HARRITON 4» Hazel Kane hit a roundtripp­er and Malia Calciano went 2-for-4 with a walk and four RBIs to lead the Panthers past the visiting Rams. Calciano pitched a complete game.

Audrey Kochanowsk­i notched two hits and a walk, and Emily Lesher went 1-for-3 with two walks and a pair of runs.

In the League: CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 15, PLUMSTEAD CHRISTIAN 0 » Grace Gormley pitched a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Crusaders Bicentenni­al (10-3, 10-3). Grace Gormley fueled the offense with three hits, including a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. On senior day, Lindsay Haseltine had a double and three RBIs, and Dejah Burley-Chambers knocked in two runs. Fellow senior Courtney Bailey played solid defense at second base. CHRISTOPHE­R DOCK 14-16, DELCO CHRISTIAN 5-1 » Not much went the Knights’ way in a twin billing with the Pioneers.

Sam Schoenlank had a two-run single in the opener for the Knights (8-8, 5-8). Erin Mulholland supplied an RBI single in the nightcap.

Girls Track

Chester’s Jiya Clayton claimed two gold medals and a silver, and topped the qualifying standard for the District 1 Class 3A Track & Field Championsh­ips in all three events at the Del Val Qualifier at Chichester.

Clayton won the 300 intermedia­te hurdles (47.63 seconds) and the 400 (59.4) and took second in the 200 (26.1).

Penn Wood’s Lowe Samolu and Interboro’s Kelly Conner were the only other double winners. Samolu won the 100 in a district qualifying time of 12.3 and was first in the long jump (15-5). Conner placed first in the shot put (30-6 ½) and the discus (75-4).

Fanta Konde and Shaniyah Toodles of Penn Wood were the only other athletes to better a qualifying standard for districts. Konde won the 100 hurdles in 16.1, while Toodles took the 200 in 26.1.

Chalk up another league title and a trip to the District 1 Class 2A Championsh­ips for Sacred Heart’s Kayleigh Doyle.

The sophomore won the 3,200-meter run for the second year in a row at the Athletic Associatio­n of Catholic Academies championsh­ips. Doyle’s winning time of 12:05.71 easily topped the qualifying standard for districts.

Teammate Emma Seifried earned a trip to the district championsh­ips in the 1,600 and 3,200 for the fourth year in a row. The senior finished fourth in both events at the league championsh­ips, running the 1,600 in 5:25.99 and the 3,200 in 12:34.79.
