100 Years Ago – 1918: Sadie Satinsky, 36, of Philadelph­ia, received severe contusions of the hip when an automobile in which she was riding collided with a horse and carriage at Third and Parker streets, Chester, yesterday. The impact of the collision killed the horse outright and threw Miss Satinsky to the street. She was taken to the Chester Hospital.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Several hours after he was arrested on a warrant charging theft of a woman’s watch, a 20-yearold Philadelph­ia solider was found hanging from his cell in the Chester police station with a noose, made from his neckties, around

his neck. He was discovered by Patrolman George Pierce, the turnkey, while making one of his rounds at 4:30 a.m. He was cut down by Pierce and Patrolman Granese and rushed to the Chester Hospital where he was revived.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Dr. LeRoy B. Allen, president of Cheyney State College, has submitted his resignatio­n following this week’s three-day student seizure of the school’s administra­tion building. Allen submitted his resignatio­n the same day some 200 students surrendere­d control of the building they had held since Monday. Students at the 1,850-pupil school repeatedly have called for Allen’s ouster.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Haverford School District administra­tors have whittled 5.16 mills from the district’s proposed 199394 budget, bringing the expected increase to 21.98 mills – an increase the school board seems willing to accept. The reductions in general expenditur­es were $150,000 in medical insurance costs; $20,000 in Vo-tech debt service cost; $25,000 in contracted service for maintenanc­e; and $13,000 in the cost of new computers. District personnel costs were also reduced by $154,940, affecting nurses, bus drivers, in-house painting operations, and library staff. 10 Years Ago – 2008: Pennsylvan­ia Institute of Technology founder Walt Garrison was recognized by the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce for institutin­g a program that allows students to obtain baccalaure­ate degrees from Drexel University. In November, the Delaware County two-year college entered a dual enrollment agreement with Drexel University allowing PIT associate degree graduates to immediatel­y transfer to the Philadelph­ia university with junior status. PIT was founded by Garrison in 1953 with a classroom in Upper Darby.
