Law enforcemen­t officers who made the ‘ultimate sacrifice’ remembered

More than 200 people attend Chester County Law Enforcemen­t Memorial Service

WEST CHESTER » Law enforcemen­t officers who made the “ultimate sacrifice” and gave their lives during performanc­e of their duties were honored Thursday at the Chester County Law Enforcemen­t Memorial Service.

A solemn audience of over 200 met for the service at the Chester County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 11. Rain threatened, but held off, while Church Street closed.

The service marked the 55th annual National Police Officer Memorial Day and National Police Week.

State Fraternal Order of was temporally Police President Les Neri saluted those who he said were true heroes, “put their lives on the line,” and “will never be forgotten.”

“We remember their courage and celebrate their bravery.”

Families of the were recognized.

“Behind every strong officer stands a strong and supportive family,” Neri said about the best Chester County has to offer.

“We honor their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their loved ones,” Coatesvill­e Police Chief John Laufer said.

Rev. Jack Crans asked the solemn audience what breaks their hearts and what are their hopes.

“Whatever breaks your heart you’ll find a hope that is eternal,” Crans said.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan noted that no matter what the problem is, an officer will say, “I’ve got this.”

“I will make the street safe for the good citizen,” Hogan said an officer will say and do. “I will find the person who did that to you.” fallen

And in return, the public supports law enforcemen­t.

“I will stand with you the whole way. We have your back,” Hogan said.

Past president of FOP Lodge No. 11 Steve Plaugher introduced the speakers. The National Anthem was sung by South Coatesvill­e Police Chief Kevin Pierce.

The invocation was given by Paul Ferguson, Lodge No. 11 Chaplain. Presentati­on of the colors was made by Chester County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and Chester County Emerald Society Drum and Pipe Band.

Lodge No. 11 President Dave Weigner welcomed the guests. “Amazing Grace” was played on bagpipes by the Emerald Society.

The sheriff’s office performed a rifle salute. George and Michael Givler played “Taps.”

Nine officers who made the ultimate sacrifice were honored: Douglas H. Pyle, was a member of the Parkesburg Police Department and made the sacrifice on Sept. 15, 1988; John J. Brown, Pennsylvan­ia State Police, Avondale, Feb. 14, 1985; David D. Monahan, State Police, Embreevill­e, April 17, 1980; and Robert W. Gates, East Pikeland Police Department, July 23, 1975.

Also, William W. Davis, Kennett Square Police Department, Nov. 15, 1972; Richard J. Posey, Kennett Square Police Department, Nov. 15, 1972; Robert J. Lomas, State Police, Avondale, June 13, 1971; Daniel W. Guldin, North Coventry Police Department, Sept. 10, 1959; and Benjamin F. Irey, Chester County Sheriff’s Department, Jan. 3, 1887. read
