BSA Troop 272 announces three newest Eagle Scouts
ROSE VALLEY » Boy Scout Troop 272 members George Hollyer and Andrew Manwaring of Wallingford and Andrew Spangler of Rose Valley have advanced to Eagle Scout. All boys are students at Strath Haven High School. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest achievement attainable in the Boy Scouts of America. Only 4 percent of Boy Scouts reach this rank, completing a multi-year qualification process.
Each scout is required to develop and complete an Eagle Scout project which brings together all of the skills that they have learned. Eagle projects must meet specific guidelines for community service and leadership.
George Hollyer’s project was for Wallingford Elementary School where he and his team of scouts and volunteers assisted in constructing a garden and outdoor learning area that makes efficient use of an unused atrium space. Jeanette Kaplan, a longstanding teacher at WES, and Mario Gentile, an architect at Shift Space Design, provided help and input towards making the project a success.
Andrew Manwaring’s Eagle Scout project was trail management through part of the Furness Park, located behind the Wallingford Train Station. He worked with community leaders and Ben Pickup from Nether Providence Township to create and improve trails through a heavily bamboo-tangled area of the park. He moved and laid planks cut from fallen trees onto the trail to prevent the return of bamboo-grass. This created a physical barrier to help make the bamboo more manageable.
Andrew Spangler went back to his elementary school, Swarthmore-Rutledge School in Swarthmore, to develop and construct a new children’s garden and outdoor seating for learning and recreational use. The project consisted of building two garden beds surrounded by six new benches, planting six trees, and expanding the area of wood chips from the bordering playground to the garden and seating area. The project was sponsored by school Principal Angela Tuck, designed by Heidi Sentivan from Cueto Kearny Architects in Swarthmore and funded by the Swarthmore Centennial Foundation and SRS Home & School Association.
Established in 1953 Boy Scout Troop 272 of Rose Valley is one of the largest troops in Delaware County with more than 60 scouts and is nationally recognized for its youth leadership development. This reputation is best illustrated by its list of over 144 Eagle Scouts. For information, visit www. troop272bsa.org.
