100 Years Ago – 1918:

Trying to butt onto a Philadelph­ia-Chester trolley car at Leipervill­e about 7 o’clock Saturday evening, a Ridley Park man fractured his skull and is lying in a serious condition in Taylor Hospital, where the physicians say there is a good chance of his recovery. Harry Andrus, motorman of the car, is also at the hospital, suffering from shock and nervous excitement due to running down the man. The hospital authoritie­s declare that the man has been drinking and in endeavorin­g to cross the road near the turn from Leipervill­e, ran smack into the foreboard of the trolley.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

Setting what may well be a world’s record for big ship launchings, Sun Shipyard and Dry Dock Co. sent two more $3 million tankers down the ways to add to the nation’s Victory Fleet. The S.S. Pueblo and the Esso Buffalo bring to 24 the number of ships launched at the world’s largest privately owned yard in the 18 weeks for 1943 and set an all-time record for launchings within a five-day period here.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

The Chester Ferry was out of service for the third day today as a result of a strike by 14 members of Transport Workers Union Local 2013. Negotiatio­ns between TWU and the Delaware River Port Authority, which operates the ferry, are not expected to resume until midweek. The workers have asked for a five-day 40-hour week, with no loss intake-home pay; a 45 cent an hour increase, and improvemen­ts in vacation, sick leave, health, welfare, and severance pay provisions.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Rosario Taraschi, owners of Rosario’s Restaurant, proposed to Morton Borough Council this week that a one-day food and craft festival beheld in October on Morton Avenue from Route 420 to Mitchell Avenue. Council President John Corcoran told Taraschi that council will consider his request. “It sounds very exciting,” Corcoran said.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

Brookhaven Councilman Harry Seth asked council to consider erecting signs at the borough butterfly garden prohibitin­g skateboard­ing and related activities. Seth said young people have been congregati­ng at the site and using the property as a recreation area. “It is not a playground,” Seth said. “It’s a memorial for children who have died in the borough and it’s a memorial for our veterans who made the supreme sacrifice.”
