Mets beat Diamondbacks behind deGrom, Conforto
NEW YORK » Jacob deGrom matched a career high with 13 strikeouts, Michael Conforto went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and the New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 on Friday night.
Wilmer Flores drove in one run and scored another to help the Mets win a series opener between struggling teams. Both bolted to fast starts this season only to sputter lately.
After an abbreviated outing last weekend in his return from the disabled list, deGrom (4-0) threw seven dominant innings this time and has won his first four decisions in a season for the first time. His career-best scoreless streak of 24.1 innings was snapped when Jake Lamb, just back from a shoulder injury, hit an RBI double in the sixth.
Lamb, however, was thrown out stretching at third for the second out of the inning.
Slumping slugger Paul Goldschmidt fanned all four times up against deGrom, who gave up six hits and walked none. The righthander missed a turn with a hyperextended right elbow before returning Sunday in Philadelphia, only to be removed as a precaution after one inning because it took him 45 pitches to get through the first. MARLINS 2, BRAVES 0 » Dan Straily pitched seven scoreless innings, J.T. Realmuto had an RBI triple and Miami beat Atlanta.
Straily (2-0) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out six to shut down the NL’s top-scoring offense. He also beat Atlanta in his previous start a week prior. PADRES 3, PIRATES 2 » Eric Hosmer hit two doubles and scored the goahead run and Tyson Ross won for the first time in more than a month as San Diego cooled off Pittsburgh.
Austin Meadows, filling in for Starling Marte in center field, made his major league debut for the Pirates and had two hits and a stolen base.
A first-round draft pick in 2013, Meadows was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier in the day when Marte was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right oblique. ORIOLES 7, RED SOX 4 » Jonathan Schoop homered and Alex Cobb got his first win of the season as Baltimore beat Boston, ending the Orioles’ 13-game road losing streak.
Manny Machado went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and Adam Jones had two hits and drove in two for the Orioles. ATHLETICS 3, BLUE JAYS 1 » Dustin Fowler hit his first career home run and also had a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning, Josh Phegley hit an RBI double in his season debut, and Oakland beat Toronto.
Lagares out for season
NEW YORK » Mets center fielder Juan Lagares is expected to miss the rest of the season because of an injury to the big toe on his left foot.
The team announced Friday that Lagares is tentatively scheduled for surgery next week to repair a complete tear of the big toe plantar plate, which is a thick supporting ligament of the toe.
Hamels’ status up in air
CHICAGO » Cole Hamels’ status remained up in the air a day after the Texas Rangers scratched the lefthander from his scheduled start because of neck stiffness.
Manager Jeff Banister was waiting for Hamels to play catch Friday before making an announcement. The Rangers have not said who will start Saturday’s game.
