100 Years Ago – 1918: The Vauclain Fire Co., of Leiperville, was formally presented with a new American La France steamer, the gift of Samuel M. Vauclain, and a motorized chimerical engine, the gift of James F. Dougherty, on Saturday afternoon, following a parade of several thousand fireman. From the member the parade got underway until the close of the day’s festivities, with the dance held in the Colonial Theatre, in the evening, features followed in quick succession every moment of the day. 75 Years Ago – 1943: A strict liquor rationing system to assure an “equitable distribution” to taprooms and individuals during wartime will be inaugurated in Pennsylvania the Liquor Control Board, Chairman Frederick T. Gelder asserted today. He explained that a card system was under consideration to accomplish rationing for more than 4,000,000 consumers, but refused to reveal when the program would be started by the 578 state-operated stores.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
The future of the proposed Chester Township apartment project, currently in doubt, will be discussed in a special meeting this week of the Chester Housing Authority. New bids for the project, already more than a year behind
schedule, possibly could add $500,000 to the $3.8 million which were bid on the project last year. The 12-month delay in construction resulted from court suits instituted by James L. Rankin, a Chester attorney opposed to the city’s urban renewal plans.
25 Years Ago – 1993:
Three Chester Upland School District activists who ran independent campaigns will join one partyendowed candidate on the ballot in November. Livia Smith, William Nix, Reuben Guy and Lucille Gyant out-polled eight other candidates for four Democratic ballot positions. Four Republican candidates, including incumbents Mattie Cunningham and Linda Cartisano, ran far behind on the Democratic ballot, but they were unopposed on the GOP side. Despite the Democrats’ recent successes in the city, Republicans have maintained a 9-0 majority on the school board.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
YMCA officials say they’ve reached an impasse regarding attempts to acquire the bubble gum factory site on Eagle Road in Haverford Township, with negotiations stuck on pricing issues. YMCA officials have been eyeing the 8-acre site since late last year.
