Manziel signs with CFL in path back to football

HAMILTON, ONTARIO » Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel is heading to the Canadian Football League, looking to salvage his football career after a turbulent and unsuccessf­ul stay with the Browns.

The quarterbac­k signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and appeared at a news conference Saturday, ending months of speculatio­n on his possible path back to the game.

“Made the decision today to sign my contract with the CFL and further my football career after a long break,” Manziel wrote on Twitter earlier in the day. “Very grateful for everyone that’s been supporting me along the way. I believe this is the best opportunit­y for me moving forward and I’m eager for what the future holds.”

His last game came at the end of the 2015 season. He now comes to a team coached by June Jones, a former NFL and college coach.

Cowboys’ Williams arrested

FRISCO, TEXAS » Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrance Williams has been arrested on a charge of public intoxicati­on after police responded to an accident involving his car and found Williams riding an electric bicycle on a road near his home.

Police in the Dallas suburb of Frisco say Williams’ Lamborghin­i left a roadway and struck a light pole near the team’s practice facility around 4:45 a.m. Saturday. Police say the driver had left the scene. Officers found Williams while investigat­ing the crash.

Rookie Wise joins Leishman in lead

DALLAS » The wind finally blew on the new Trinity Forest course at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Aaron Wise, 21, wasn’t rattled, not even by a bogey that dropped him into a tie for the lead on the final hole. Now the PGA Tour rookie is ready for another run at his first victory.

Wise shot a 3-under 68 to pull even with Marc Leishman, four shots ahead of Matt Jones and Kevin Na going into the final round. Leishman shot 69 after setting a 36hole tournament record previously shared by Tiger Woods.

Jimenez grabs 3-shot lead

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. » Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Regions Tradition.

Jimenez birdied the final hole to reach 17-under 199 at Greystone Golf & Country Club, matching Gil Morgan’s 54-hole Tradition record set in 1997. Steve Stricker was second.

Nadal beats Djokovic

ROME » The latest installmen­t in the rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic met expectatio­ns for one tight set. Then Nadal pulled away for a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win to reach the Italian Open final on Saturday.

Nadal’s opponent in Sunday’s final will be defending champion Alexander Zverev, who recovered from an early break in the second set to beat Marin Cilic 7-6 (13), 6-4.

On the women’s side, top-ranked Simona Halep rallied past three-time Rome champion Maria Sharapova 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and will again face Elina Svitolina for the trophy. Svitolina defeated Anna Kontaveit 6-4, 6-3.

Froome wins 14th stage

MONTE ZONCOLAN, ITALY » Chris Froome responded to his critics with a fantastic ride up Monte Zoncolan to win the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia, but British compatriot Simon Yates consolidat­ed his overall lead.

Froome attacked with about four kilometers remaining of the tough 186-kilometer route from San Vito al Tagliament­o. The four-time Tour de France finished six seconds ahead of Yates.
