Cubs split with Reds after benches clear in first game

CINCINNATI » Ian Happ hit his second home run of the doubleheader, Jason Heyward tied his career high with four RBIs and Jose Quintana allowed one hit in seven shutdown innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-0 Saturday night for a split.

In the first game, Billy Hamilton drew a bases-loaded walk from Justin Wilson while batting against a five-man, drawn-in infield with no outs in the 11th inning and the Reds outlasted the Cubs 5-4.

Happ also tripled and doubled in the first game.

The benches cleared in the seventh of the opener when Javier Baez exchanged words with Reds reliever Amir Garrett after striking out to end the inning. The fracas was quickly broken up.

Baez hit a grand slam off Garrett last May. This time, Garrett shouted in celebration after fanning Baez, then stared at him and exchanged words. DODGERS 4, NATIONALS 1 » Ross Stripling struck out a career-high nine in six innings as Los Angeles won the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

Howie Kendrick, hitting a teamleading .303 for the Nationals, took an awkward step while retreating to catch a deep flyball to left field in the eighth. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner made his 22nd straight start of allowing no more than three earned runs, breaking the team record set by Sonny Siebert in 1965. GIANTS 9, ROCKIES 4 » Brandon Crawford got three more hits and drove in four runs as San Francisco ended a three-game skid.

Crawford reached on a bloop single in the second inning, had a tworun double in the third and hit a two-run homer in the sixth. He is 31 for 69 (.449) in May. ATHLETICS 5, BLUE JAYS 4 » Chad Pinder hit his first career grand slam as Oakland rallied with five runs in the eighth inning.

Pinder’s drive off Tyler Clippard (4-1) completed the Athletics’ comeback from a 4-0 deficit.
