100 Years Ago – 1918:
An East Eighteenth Street man, arrested by Chester Special Officer Ditchfield for violation of the Deshong Park rules, was arraigned before Magistrate Berry this morning and fined $5 for costs. An Eddystone man, arrested by Detective Dougherty at Seventh Street and Edgmont Avenue, down and out, discharged.
75 Years Ago – 1943: Five hundred motorists were stopped at the Delaware River Bridge in Philadelphia last night as Office of Price Administration agents, aided by police, began enforcing the non-essential driving ban. Meanwhile, transportation officials
reported their facilities overtaxed as thousands of persons, deprived of the use of their automobiles, crowded trolleys, subway trains and buses.
50 Years Ago – 1968: The Penn-Delco Union School Board said this week it plans to enact a 1 percent wage tax next month to help finance its estimated $4.2 million 1968-69 budget without raising real estate taxes. The board estimated the proposed wage tax – the first such levy to be imposed by a Delaware County school district – would bring in $412,500 during the coming school year.
25 Years Ago – 1993:
Colwyn voters will get their say in November about whether to dissolve the police department and contract Darby Borough police. The motion to put the question on the ballot was made by Councilwoman Debbie Thomas after she said she learned of two meetings to which she wasn’t invited to despite being a member of the police committee. The meetings were to discuss a possible merger with Darby police and to talk with Police Chief William Garrity about his retirement.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
County council held a first reading of a long-awaited ordinance to incorporate a new authority vested with overseeing development of the Chester waterfront. Initial board members of the Delaware County Chester Waterfront Industrial Development Authority will be state Sen. Dominic Pileggi, R-9 of Chester, for a period of five years; Republican Chester Mayor Wendell N. Butler Jr. for four years; Republican Chadds Ford Supervisor Deborah Love D’Elia for three years; Steamfitters Local 420 Business Agent Joseph McMahon for two years; and Republican county council Chairman Linda Cartisano for one year.
