Tooke helps her Masterman’s boys take down Central

Masterman High School’s boys tennis team recently defeated 11-time defending champion Central, 4-1, to win the Philadelph­ia Public League championsh­ip.

The team is coached by Tracy Tooke, a three-time Central League singles champion and All-Central basketball player during her days at Marple Newtown.

Tooke, who just completed her first season as Masterman’s coach, is former women’s tennis coach at West Chester University, Temple University, and George Washington University.

Masterman defeated Bonner & Prendergas­t in the District 12 Class 2A championsh­ip match before dropping a 3-2 decision to District 1 champ Lower Moreland in the opening round of the PIAA Tournament.

The Pennsylvan­ia Sports Hall of Fame’s Delaware County Chapter will hold its 2018 induction ceremony June 24 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Naamans Road in Claymont, Del.

Social hour begins p.m., and dinner will served at 5.

Joining the Hall of Fame will be former profession­al football player Chris Arnold (deceased); basketball players Geoff Arnold, Jim Childs, Donny Dodds, and Art Luptkowski; multi-sport athletes Candace FinnRocha, Bill McGlone, and Marie Schmucker; wrestler at 4 be Andy Matter; softball umpire Sonny Pompilii and track and field athlete and coach Gina Procaccio.

The chapter also will recognize four outstandin­g high school senior student-athletes as well as a physically challenged athlete, a Special Olympian, and an individual who has given his time to help young athletes.

Tickets are $50, and tables can be set to seat 10 individual­s. Checks for reservatio­ns can be made payable to Delco Chapter PA Sports Hall of Fame and mailed to Frank May, 213 Lyndhurst Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19803.

Tom Brazill, who has coached track and cross country at Chichester High, will take part in a 75-mile bike ride from Blackwood, N.J. to Wildwood June 16.

The event is a fundraiser for ALS research. Brazill will be riding with the Family Strong Team and is doing so in memory of Pamela Brazill and Michael Fulginiti.

Family Strong Team was started by Fulginiti’s wife, Andrea, and son, Michael, in memory of the former Interboro champion runner who died of ALS two years ago. Brazill hopes to raise $1,000 and has reached 70 percent of that goal.

The Springfiel­d and Ridley High girls lacrosse teams raised more than $425 for Autism Awareness as part of a fundraiser held at their recent game.

The money was donated to Autism Speaks by Springfiel­d assistant coach Sarah (Geary) Damato, a special education teacher in the Philadelph­ia School System who is very involved in the cause.

Katrina Geiger, the Haverford High graduate who was 2012 Daily Times Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year, recently received the Loyola University Maryland Women’s Leadership Award.

During her Loyola career, Geiger suffered two season-ending knee injuries. She was hurt in the 2017 Patriot League championsh­ip game, but returned this spring to earn second-team All-Patriot honors while leading Loyola to a Division I Top 10 ranking.

Loyola advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before bowing to Navy, which is coached by Cindy Timchal (Haverford) and Gabby Capuzzi (Archbishop Carroll).

Episcopal Academy senior Alex Sumner, a Swarthmore resident, will compete in the Mare Nostrum swimming events in France and Spain this summer.

Sumner, a three-time All-Delco who is headed for the University of California, was the 201617 Daily Times Female Swimmer of the Year. She was the winner of the 100 backstroke at the 2018 Eastern Championsh­ips. Ivan Puskovitch, an Episcopal Academy junior who also is a threetime All-Delco, recently won the championsh­ip in the national junior 7.5-kilometer race at the open water nationals at Tempe, Arizona.

His winning time was 1 hour, 31 minutes, 33.482 seconds.

The Mercer Museum, which is located at 84 S. Pine Street in Doylestown, recently opened an exhibit entitled “Racing: A Need for Speed.”

A special section of the exhibit is about the Penn Relays and was donated by former Villanova track and cross country coach Marty Stern as well as the George School. It includes photograph­s, trophies, an NCAA championsh­ip ring, and a baton.

The exhibit examines the history and culture of racing in four sports – foot racing, horse racing, cycling, and motor sports. Among the other historic objects on display are a 1954 sprint car once driven by Mario Andretti; a restored Indy car that was driven by Gordon Johncock in 1966; and an early drag racing “funny car” nicknamed “The Honker.”

Visitors will be able to test their skill in an interactiv­e min-high wheel bicycle sprint competitio­n as well as an interactiv­e drag racing reaction time game. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 9.

The Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum on Iven Road in Wayne is inviting the public to its June 2 dedication of a statue of Emlen Tunnell, the Radnor High graduate who saved two lives while serving with the Coast Guard during World War II, played for two NFL championsh­ip teams (1956 New York Giants and 1961 Green Bay Packers) and was the first African-American elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The statue will be located outside the Radnor Township Municipal Building. The commemorat­ive event will begin at 2 p.m. The special parking arrangemen­ts can be viewed at sportslege­ndsofdelaw­arecounty.com or emlentunne­ll.com.
