100 Years Ago – 1918:
Plans are underway for the construction of a 1,000 room hotel to accommodate workmen at the Sun Shipbuilding Co. The new structure, which will be the largest in the city, will be erected opposite the building operation of the Price Co. on what was formerly known as the Chester baseball park, at Ninth and Hyatt streets.
75 Years Ago – 1943:
President Edwin Barclay, of the African Republic of Liberia, will pay an official visit to Chester on Thursday, stopping at the City Hall for a few minutes before going to Sun Ship, where will have lunch with John G. Pew, president of the company, and then address the thousands of workers in the all-black No. 4 yard. Albert A. Reading, Delaware County deputy sheriff, will escort the president from Philadelphia. Driving down Chester Pike, they will be met at Ridley Creek by Mayor Ralph F. Swarts and a delegation of other officials.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
Delaware County residents began a new month today under sunny skies after wading through the wettest May in 15 years. Showers are expected Sunday, though. The Weather Bureau at International Airport record 5.17 inches of rain during May, with nearly half of it falling during the past week. 25 Years Ago – 1993:
The William Penn School Board will meet tonight with parents of students at the Colwyn School, which has been partially closed by a fungus that can cause respiratory problems. Parents want the school closed and the children sent to Bell Avenue School because of health and safety concerns. At a previous meeting, parents Cheryl Field, Marlene Lenton, Carolyn Waldov and Carolyn Ashley told about 90 other parents and taxpayers about the danger of Aspergillus Fumigatus, the high levels of carbon dioxide in the school, poor ventilation and overcrowding. 10 Years Ago – 2008: Penn State Brandywine capped its year-long 40th anniversary celebration with a gala evening at the Aronimink Country Club that honored campus founder/first CEO John Vairo and recognized six outstanding alumni for their achievements. The black-tie event drew more than 300 people and raised more than $40,000 to benefit the student scholarship fund. A silent auction featured 40 painted scaled-down replicas of the university’s beloved Nittany Lion mascot, with the “Joe Paw Lion,” saluting legendary Penn State Coach Joe Paterno, going for $1,300.
