UPPER DARBY » As a 15-year-old Upper Darby High School freshman remained hospitalized with a stab wound to his back and cuts to his forearm, hand, neck and head, a 14-year-old freshman was in police custody waiting to be charged with assault and related offenses, Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said late Monday afternoon.

Investigators were still preparing the juvenile petition against the alleged offender, Chitwood said.

Without elaborating, Chitwood said the apparent motive in the assault was “over a girl.”

Police received a report of a stabbing at the high school about 11:40 a.m.

According to Chitwood, the incident occurred in a stairwell between the first and second floors in the rear of the school. He described the area as remote. At the time, the school was undergoing an early dismissal due to final exams.

In a prepared statement, Upper Darby School District Superintendent Dan Nerelli said, “While we are deeply troubled by the violent act that took place between two of our students, we are relieved to have learned that the victim is stable and will be released soon from the hospital and that the perpetrator is currently in police custody.”

Nerelli added, “The national issue of school violence hit home today, and while today’s incident was an isolated event, we know that we must continue the conversation regarding school safety.”

Nerelli thanked Security Director Lou Gentile and his team of security officers for their joint efforts with Upper Darby police.

“Together, they were able to respond quickly and investigate thoroughly to apprehend a suspect and bring closure to this incident. I’d also like to thank our high school staff members who always keep our students’ safety and well- being as their top priority,” Nerelli said.

According to Nerelli, the high school schedule for the remainder of the week will remain as it is listed on the calendar for final exams and commencement. In addition, he said counseling will be available for any students who need assistance in coping with the incident.
