100 Years Ago – 1918: A triple flag-raising was enjoyed last evening at 8 o’clock by the Philadelphia Suburban Gas and Electric Co. at Storeroom’s Park, on Welsh Street, Chester, under the auspices of the Employees’ Association, Ralph Jones, the president, in charge. The Service Flag contained 36 stars including six officers representing the Chester and Darby officers.
75 Years Ago – 1943:
Media citizens are planning a rousing welcome for two of the borough’s outstanding war heroes, both of whom are scheduled to come home this week on furloughs. Pfc. Jack Sugarman, Marine hero and holder of the Navy Blue cross, and Captain John G. Moe, Jr., of the Army Air Corps, who won the Flying Cross for valor in the South Pacific, will be honored by civic and veterans groups on Friday evening.
50 Years Ago – 1968:
Three Delaware County residents, who were ordained to the priesthood on May 18 in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, have been assigned by John Cardinal Krol. They are Rev. Leo J. McKenzie, of Drexel Hill, will service as assistant pastor of St. Anastasia Church, Newtown Square; Rev. James F. McTamney, of Havertown to professor, Cardinal O’Hara High School, and assistant pastor pro tem at the Transfiguration of Our Lord Church, Philadelphia; Rev. James F. Tallon, of Yeadon, will service as assistant pastor at St. Ann’s Church, Phoenixville.
25 Years Ago – 1993:
The Chester Upland School Board and its teachers union remain a world apart after nearly six months of contract talks, with the teachers seeking a pay hike of about 40 percent over three years and the board insisting that wages be frozen at current levels. Both sides rejected recommendations from a state-appointed factfinder. The pay increases would increase the salary of teacher with a master’s degree and at least 18 years of experiences from $50,163 this year to $70,288 in 1995-96.
10 Years Ago – 2008:
Eddystone council recently rejected bids for improvements to Lighthouse Hall Recreation Center because they came in higher than the federal Community Development Block Grant received by the borough for the work. The bids totaled $70,000 while the grant was $35,000. Council will write to Delaware County Planning Department Director John Pickett to see if the grant amount can be increased.
