U.D. police seek ID of man fatally struck by automobile
UPPER DARBY » Police are looking to identify a man who was killed Friday night when he was struck by a car while attempting to cross West Chester Pike.
Upper Darby police described the victim as a Hispanic male with dark hair in his 30s, standing about 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 111 pounds. He was wearing a light blue shirt and striped pajama bottoms. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said the department has not received any reports of a missing person for a man fitting his description and there have been no matches on his fingerprints.
According to Chitwood, the accident victim had walked into Highland Beverage in the 7700 block of West Chester Pike at approximately 10:45 p.m. to buy beer and then left the store and walked into a travel lane while attempting to cross the street. He did not try to cross the street in a designated crosswalk located at the corner where the beer store is at West Chester Pike and Pennock Avenue. Responding officers to the scene tried to revive the man with CPR and a portable AED, but they were not successful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was hit by a 28-year-old driver from New Jersey who was heading east on West Chester Pike in the left lane going approximately 45 mph. Chitwood said the driver pulled over after hitting the man, called 911 and voluntarily submitted to a blood test to check for intoxication. The driver was cleared and no charges have been filed in what Chitwood called a tragic accident. The investigation is still ongoing. For anyone with information on the victim are asked to call Upper Darby police at 610-734-7693.
