McGinnis’ timely hit lifts Broomall-Newtown to a victory
Broomall-Newtown and 21st Ward wasted no time providing some excitement in the opening game of District 1 Babe Ruth 14-year-old tournament at Dermond Field in Upper Darby.
Broomall-Newtown needed an RBI single from Joe McGinnis in the fourth inning to pull out a 3-2 victory over 21st Ward in the opening game of the four-team tournament, double-elimination tourney.
UDHL knocked off Haverford, 10-4, in the second game to advance to Sunday’s winner’s bracket final against B-N at 10 a.m. The winner of that game advances
to the district championship round. Haverford takes on 21st Ward in the losers bracket at 12:30 p.m.
Matt Abate ripped a two-run triple in the third inning to give Broomall-Newtown a 2-1 lead. Dom Carafa threw four innings to get the win.
UDHL 10, HAVERFORD 4 » Paul Morgan fanned five in four innings and received a lot of offensive help to get the win.
Kirby Rich drove in two runs. Matt Tassone was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Jake Franzini was 1-for-1 with two RBIs and Sean Webb had a hit and knocked in two runs. In the District 1 15-year-old tournament:
UDHL 12, 21ST WARD 7 » Hunter Kraiza pitched 2.1 innings in relief to get the win and send UDHL into the winners bracket final against host Broomall-Newtown Sunday (10 a.m.). The winner of that game advances to the championship round while the loser faces 21st Ward Monday night at Thomas Field in the losers bracket final.
Nate Russell led the UDHL offense. He was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Jason Rodden added two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Eric Genther had two hits, two runs scored and one RBI.
Anthony Sannicandro was 3-for-4 for 21st Ward. In the Delco League:
WAYNE 5, ASTON 3 » Anthony Viggiano got a fly ball with runners at second and third in the seventh inning to earn the same. Luke Zimmer went 4.2 innings to pick up the first Delco League win of his career.
Matt Briner paced the offense with three hits. Petr Cocchino was 2-for-3 with ahomer and three RBIs. Max Carney collected two hits for Aston.
