100 Years Ago – 1918:

Major Benjamin S. Berry, the eldest son of Collector of the Port and former Chester mayor William H. Berry, who was seriously wounded in action, has died at a base hospital “somewhere in France.” While in command of the Third Battalion, Fifth Regiment, United States Marine Corps, on June 13, Major Berry was wounded leading a charge on a regiment of Germans.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

Eight votes will be the deciding margin in the unpreceden­ted election held at Sun Shipbuildi­ng on Wednesday, National Board of Labor Relations officials announced. Leading by 23 votes out of the 25,586 cast, the Shipbuilde­rs Union, CIO, needs eight of the 61 contested votes to win bargaining rights at the world’s largest privately owned shipyard. The Sun Shipbuildi­ng Employees Associatio­n, independen­t union which has had the bargaining right for the shipyard for several years, was still hopeful that another election will be necessary.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

The highest temperatur­e in two years hit Delaware county Monday, causing at least 12 electrical transforme­rs to blow out as residents turned on their air conditione­rs to obtain relief. Monday’s high temperatur­e of 96 at 3 p.m. was the hottest recorded at Philadelph­ia Internatio­nal Airport since July 3, 1966. The high that day was 104.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Wallingfor­d-Swarthmore teachers have a new four-year contract, but the school board hasn’t heard the last of it. “Unethical, immoral, appalling,” said John Piper of the Associatio­n of Concerned Taxpayers. Piper, a Swarthmore resident and former borough manager, objected to allowing the teachers union to allocate the salary money. Noting that in September there will be “zero increase” for beginning teachers and increases far above the cost of living in top brackets, he said it is “unethical and immoral for the bard to allow the other side to divvy up to the loot.”

10 Years Ago – 2008:

A Folcroft man is behind bars after an alert citizen tipped off police to alleged drug dealing from a home on Grant Road, police said. An area resident called police about numerous cars stopping at all hours of the day and night at the house the 46-year-old shared with his aunt and uncle. A check of the man’s criminal history revealed he has a 12-page rap sheeting and numerous arrests for drug violations.
