100 Years Ago – 1918: A Leiperville man, who was picked up by a patrolman at Fifth Street and Concord Avenue in Chester, badly lacerated and with a revolver in his pocket, was removed to the Chester Hospital for repairs and then to the City Hall. He was arraigned before Magistrate Berry today for a further hearing. He was unable to explain how he was injured.

75 Years Ago – 1943: From committee Chairman Thomas B. McCabe: When the idea of raising $675,000 for a new YMCA for Chester and Delaware County was first suggested there were plenty of scoffers who said, “It can’t be done!” Then the thousands of men and women who believe in this community and love it spoke up. They knew that any plan to provide a better break for the youth of this area would get the support of our people. Right now both sides are claiming victory. You owe it to our youth, to your community, to yourself. Only $130,000 more is needed. Let’s finish the job!

50 Years Ago – 1968: Pennsylvania Secretary of Forests and Waters Maurice J. Goddard has quashed talk from a member of the three-man Delaware County Aviation Authority that the county’s proposed general aviation airport may be inside the Ridley Creek State Park. “We have that land out there as a state park and an airport just isn’t comparable to a state park,” Goddard said.

25 Years Ago – 1993: When city ministries and police formed a police-clergy ministry last year, religious leaders wanted to provide support not only to the Chester community but to street officers as well. On Friday, hours following the murder of Officer Connie Hawkins, they did just that. “I was just glad to be there, to be a listening ear,” said the Rev. William “Rocky” Brown, who met with three of the city’s four surviving female police officers for several hours.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Dan Clement was packed and ready for the holiday weekend Thursday, but he had just one more chore before hitting the road: Fill up the tank, yet again. “I’ve put in $300 in this truck just this week,” he said at the Folcroft Wawa. The Drexel Hill resident already drove to Wildwood earlier in the week to drop off his family. He returned to finish a week of work – complete with daily 40-mile commutes – before joining them.
