100 Years Ago – 1918: A large gathering of people witnessed the unveiling of a handsome memorial erected to the memory of the Rev. Joseph F. Timmins, late pastor of St. Michael’s Church in Chester. The memorial, consisting of a granite tomb and a heavy granite cross 8 feet high, marks the last resting place of Father Joseph, who died one year ago. It is a beautiful piece of sculpture work and was furnished by John F. Cullis of Chester.
75 Years Ago – 1943: More than 60 automobile owners today obtained authorization to drive their cars on a vacation trip as the Chester ration board began its first day of issuing special merits under new Office of Price Administration regulations.
50 Years Ago – 1968: Thirteen teens were picked up during the weekend on suspicion of burglarizing several homes and a school and the theft of 14 automobiles, Upper Darby police announced Sunday. Detective James Ellis said the boys, ranging from 1317, admitted two of the car thefts. He said patrolmen James Barnes and Lester Pitzer discovered one of the stolen cars being driven by a 13-year-old Saturday.
25 Years Ago – 1993: Veteran Daily Times police reporter John M. Roman unwittingly made weather news yesterday. The trusty 1983 blue Nissan Sentra hatchback Roman parked in the newspaper’s parking lot was crunched by a falling tree and severely damaged during the height of a severe thunderstorm. The first appreciable rainfall in two weeks cooled temperatures, but also left a wake of destruction in its path. “The temperature dropped as much as 20 degrees in most of the places it rained,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Martin Ross.
10 Years Ago – 2008: From police and local government briefs: An open inspection for gambling at a Ridley Township bar Monday afternoon netted authorities a video poker machine, a video slot machine, gambling paraphernalia and $15,610; a Yeadon couple, 22 and 20, accused of breaking an Upper Darby meter maid’s arm after she wrote a $15 ticket for their illegally parked car waived a preliminary hearing Monday; Bethel Township supervisors requested residents and visitors refrain from feeding the geese at the John Adkinson Park. There have been several complaints in reference to this becoming a serious problem as the geese are now approaching visitors with the expectation of being fed.
