Williamson student places in national skills event

Colleges, universiti­es announce honors and degrees conferred for the spring semester

LOUISVILLE, KY. » A student from the Williamson College of the Trades picked up second place honors at the 2018 SkillsUSA Championsh­ips from June 27-28.

Brian Ehly, of Upper Darby, received the college silver medal in plumbing at the nation’s highest award event for career and technical education. Ehly was one of approximat­ely 1,000 students from 6,300 to earn medals in 102 hands-on occupation­al and leadership competitio­ns.

Widener prof wins grant

CHESTER » Widener University’s School of Engineerin­g Assistant Professor Dipendu Saha, Ph.D. was awarded a $100,000 grant by the National Science Foundation to develop a new tool that will selectivel­y recover two rareearth elements. The grant will lead to the developmen­t of a new tool that will alleviate the U.S. dependency on foreign countries and create a new tool will replace the existing outdated and environmen­tally hazardous technology.

Rare-earth elements are used in everyday devices such electronic­s, optical devices, computer hard drives, power sources and various military applicatio­ns.

The grant is available for two years and was funded through the Early-Concepts Grants for Explorator­y Research program.

In other Widener news, students embarked to Costa Rica to learn about the environmen­t and culture of coffee.

Junior John Chrostek, of Morton, and Natalie Weaver, of Springfiel­d, traveled to the island in mid-May as part of an interdisci­plinary course about the Central American country’s coffee production.

The students stayed at the Consortium of Agro-ecological Research and Education for Sustainabi­lity for the 21st Century (CARES21), which is Widener’s five-acre property north of San Jose.

Two new faces will be joining the school’s ranks.

Widener President Julie Wollman recently named Theresa Travis as the school’s next vice president of advancemen­t. Travis was a senior associate to Saint Joseph’s University Vice President for Developmen­t and Alumnia Relations before starting her new position at Widener on July 9.

Deb Morley has been named the director of the school’s Wolfgram Memorial Library. As director she will oversee library staff who support Widener’s various academic programs on its main campus, develop online course and other innovative teaching and learning strategies.

Immaculata hosts open house

The board voted on June 20 to have Donald Heller serve as chairman, Kevin Scott as vice chairman and Stephen Gambescia was reelected as board secretary. Each person will serve for a six-year term.

Student attends leadership forum

RADNOR » Drexel Hill Middle School student Lucas Collins will take part at the National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM at Villanova University this summer. The NYLF program is run by Envision, an organizati­on that focuses on giving high-aspiring students the opportunit­y to turn their career and life aspiration into reality.

Alvernia University
