Mathes & Co. have Broomall-Newtown 13s on a roll

Broomall-Newtown’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth team is having a good time in the state tournament.

An 11-run third inning spurred BroomallNe­wtown to a 13-2 rout of 21st Ward, Saturday at Franklin Park in Pittsburgh.

Owen Mathes, Joe Verrekia, Jay McDonnell and Justin Brennan had key hits to drive in runs in the third inning. Jonny Small went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Paul Daly finished 2-for-2 with a double and two ribbies.

Brennan and Jimmy Wigo shared the pitching duties and allowed only five hits. B-N improved to 4-0 and will play the winner of IFPAA-Mifflin County Sunday.

Babe Ruth 14s

The runs and hits kept coming for UDHL in its 19-0, four-inning shellackin­g over Aston Valley in pool play of the state tournament in Roxborough.

Paul Morgan, Matt Passone, Sam Chestnut combined to throw the shutout. Danny Sullivan led the offensive attack, going 4-for4. James Sousa and Kirby Ritch each went 2-for-2.

UDHL is 2-0 in pool play. Next up is Daniel Boone, Sunday at Noon.

UDHL is off to a

strong

start

at the Babe Ruth 15s state tournament in Williamspo­rt, following up a 14-2 win Friday night with a forfeit victory Saturday.

Chris Dorazio threw a complete game Friday night, scattering three hits and striking out five. Keith Gartland went 4-for-4 with a double. Dorazio and Jake Amatucci each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Altoona forfeited to UDFL Saturday, leaving it 2-0 heading into Sunday’s game with Mifflin County. LANSFORD 3, BROOMALL-NEWTOWN 2 » Michael Schumacher struck out 10 in 5.2 innings late Friday, but Broomall-Newtown lost in the first pool play game states.

Gavin Gilronans triple and scored on Schumacher’s sacrifice fly in Jimmy O’Brien briefly tied the single in the fifth.

Andrew Yates collected three hits and three RBIs to help Broomall-Newtown defeat top-seeded Narberth, 16-2, in the losers bracket round of the playoffs.

Joe Cipolloni and Matt Cicalese each chipped in with two hits and three RBIs. Joe Cipolloni threw four innings to get the win and Yates pitched three innings of shutout relief.

B-N and Wayne meet Monday at 5:30 for the right to play Nether Providence in the championsh­ip round.
