100 Years Ago – 1918: Two slight fires took place in Chester yesterday. Flames at the Highland Avenue plant of the Philadelphia and Suburban Gas and Electric Co. were confined to a chute and a railroad car which became ignited from hot coke. District companies were called to Ninth and Sproul streets when an inflammable material on a dump at that location became ignited in an unknown manner. 75 Years Ago – 1943: Who left a copy of May 6 issue of the Chester Times in a foxhole on a North African battlefield? Staff Sgt. Charles H. Ziegler, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ziegler, of Baltimore Avenue, Milmont Park, who is now serving with an engineering decision in North Africa, would like to know the subscriber’s name. A fellow sergeant handed him the copy which he had picked up in the foxhole. In it was Ziegler’s picture and an account of his wound received Feb. 19, he wrote in a recent letter to his parents. “It’s a small world,” wrote Sgt. Ziegler. In his letter, written June 11, he said that a Christmas package with four cartons of cigarettes had just been received. His parents sent the package last October. 50 Years Ago – 1968: A 9-year-old Roslyn, Montgomery County, boy received cuts on both legs when he ran through a sliding glass patio door that he thought was open at the home of his aunt, Jeanette Rand, in Folcroft. 25 Years Ago – 1993: A man who ran away from the psychiatric unit at Community Hospital jumped into the Delaware River and would have drowned if not for a jet skier who towed him to safety, Chester police said. The 25-year-old Berwyn resident was checking in on a court-ordered evaluation when he ran away and jumped in the water near Highland Avenue. Dave and Deborah Golder, of the 200 block of West 24th Street, Chester, and Steven Donato, 28, of the 100 block of Chelton Road, Parkside, were credited by police with helping save the man’s life. 10 Years Ago – 2008:

A 41-year-old city man was arrested Saturday night for allegedly refusing to leave an unauthorized block party in Chester. The Mill Street resident, who has at least two prior arrests on similar charges, was charged with public drunkenness, obstructing highways, resisting arrest and failure to disperse. He was arraigned and remanded to Delaware County’s prison in lieu of 10 percent of $2,500 bail.
