Tebow out for season with broken right hand
Tim Tebow’s season doesn’t sound like it will finish in a Mets uniform.
Tebow’s impressive campaign with Double-A Binghamton ended after he broke the hamate bone in his right hand during the weekend series against the Thunder.
The quarterback-turned-outfielder suffered the injury in Thursday’s series opener and reported to manager Luis Rojas that he didn’t feel comfortable swinging the bat. He was sent to New York for an X-ray and MRI Friday and then saw a hand specialist Monday. Hamate bone fractures usually require 6-8 weeks recovery time, Mets assistant GM John Ricco said.
“So his season is effectively over,” Ricco said.
Tebow slashed .273/.336/.399 with six homers and 36 RBIs in 84 games. The 30-year-old was named an Eastern League All-Star and was also on pace to earn a call-up to the Mets in September.
“I view this season as a complete positive,” Ricco said. “Obviously it ends disappointingly. He’s going to miss the last month, month-plus. But to see a guy who in a couple short years is now competing at the Double-A level and thriving, really — the last couple months he was playing really well, so I don’t think how that could be anything but a positive.”
Tebow hit .340 in July before the injury and his .273 average ranks 22nd in the Eastern League.
