Ridley Area Little League stays alive in states

If you follow Ridley Area Little League on Twitter, you know that #RALL, #GangGreen and #BoysofSumm­er are common hashtags in every tweet.

Whoever runs the team’s Twitter account added #SurviveAnd­Advance to that list this week.

RALL did more than just survive in Wednesday’s losers’ bracket portion of the state major league tournament. It rolled to a 10-0 victory, five-inning over Kennett Little League to keep its state title hopes alive.

The win sends Ridley Area into the losers’ bracket semifinals Friday against Lehigh, an 11-1 victor over Clarion. RALL and Lehigh meet at 11 a.m. at Berwick Little League. The winner advances to Saturday’s losers’ bracket final against Canonsburg, which dropped a 3-1 decision to Keystone in the winners’ bracket final.

RALL’s win was the continuati­on of a game that was suspended by rain after one inning Wednesday. Ridley had a 4-0 lead when play resumed and kept the pressure on. After going scoreless in the second inning, RALL tallied once in the top of the third inning, three in the fourth and two in the fifth

Jaxon Kehoe and Irv Fisher both went deep for Ridley Area. Carter Williams drove in three runs and Connor Scanlan knocked in a pair of runs. Michael Floirendo fanned six and allowed two hits in 3.2 innings to get the win.

Senior EDCO

Briarcliff­e is one step closer to a second straight championsh­ip.

Jimmy Calabrese was dazzling in his last time as a starting pitcher in a Briarcliff­e uniform. He threw a completega­me four-hitter with six strikeouts in a 7-1 triumph over Brookhaven.

The victory gives Briarcliff­e a 2-1 lead in the best-of-5 series. Game 4 is 5:45 Friday night at Durkin Field in Brookhaven.

If a Game 5 is necessary, it will be Sunday afternoon at Gable Field in Newtown Square at 3.

Christian DiGalbo broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple in the fifth inning. Seamus McCaffrey went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Delco League

Grant Kernaghan came up big as the Upper Darby Blue Sox struck first in the best-of-3 quarterfin­als with a 10-4 victory over the Marple Newtown Black Sox.

Upper Darby can wrap up the series with a win Friday at Kerr Field in Yeadon (5:45).

Kernaghan went the distance and struck out five to get the win. The Blue Sox broke the game open with four runs in the top of the first inning.

Vince Gasparro led the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Ben Mutz collected two hits and one RBI, while Joe Suppa added two hits including a double and three runs scored.

ASTON VALLEY 7, SPRINGFIEL­D 4 » The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 quarterfin­als series. Game 2 is Friday night at 5:45 at Springfiel­d High School. No other details were reported.

Babe Ruth

Broomall-Newtown stayed undefeated in pool play in the 13U Middle Atlantic Regional in Somers Point, N.J. with a 5-4 victory over Atlantic West (N.J.). No other details were reported.

Broomall-Newtown takes on Piedmont (Del.) in its third game in pool play Friday morning at 9:30.

Meanwhile, constant rain has forced tournament officials to switch the 14U Middle Atlantic Regional in Williamspo­rt from pool play to a double-eliminatio­n tournament.

UDHL, the Pennsylvan­ia state champion, had Thursday off and opens play at 2 p.m. Friday against Altoona, the team UDHL beat, 19-8, to win the state title.
