100 Years Ago – 1918:

The city of Chester has gone over the top in bonds, war chest funds and W.S.S. stamps, and now it expects to go over the top in its 10day campaign for enlistment­s of young women in the United States Student Reserve. There will be a mighty turnout of citizens of the city and surroundin­g county at the patriotic rally tomorrow night at the Deshong mansion.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

Petitions for the pre-empted ticket which will oppose the McClure machine in the November general election are now being circulated and will be filed at Media within two weeks. George D. Carney, chairman of the Committee of 100 (anti-McClure faction of the Chester Republican Party), said his organizati­on will redouble its efforts to elect a mayor, two councilmen, a city treasurer and a controller, despite the voiding on the nominating petitions for the Republican primary by the County Board of Elections on Friday night.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

Mayor John H. Nacrelli endorsed the passage of a city rent-withholdin­g policy during testimony at the Pennsylvan­ia Human Relations Commission public hearing into Chester’s racial problems. Nacrelli said he would support to protect tenants living in substandar­d housing as soon as the city could put the program on “safe legal ground.”

25 Years Ago – 1993:

Chester City Council honored four firemen and two police officers who rescued a woman who tried to committee suicide by jumping in the Delaware River on June 29. Honored with proclamati­ons signed by Mayor Barbara Bohannan-Sheppard were Battalion Chief James L. Johnson of the Chester Fire Department, firefighte­rs Christophe­r Workman, Thomas Groch and Edward Crawford, and officers James Chubb and Robert Blythe.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

Two Upper Darby 15-yearolds and an 11-year-old, who all allegedly participat­ed in two midday attacks July 24, have been arrested and are charged with robbery, theft and assault. The juveniles, working with one other person, attacked a man in his 30s, asking him for the time of day, then allegedly attacked the man from behind. They went through his pockets and took his money before he was able to escape and call 911, according to police. The same group then attacked a 75-year-old woman who was walking along Chestnut Street and Wellington Road, police said. They knocked her down and took her pocketbook.
