100Years Ago – 1918: Running at express speed, a trolley car of the Southern Pennsylvan­ia Traction Company jumped the track and injured many persons at Ninth Street and Saville Avenue, Eddystone, last night. The car, whose motorman was said to have been traveling at 30mph toward Chester, struck the closed switch with such terrific force that the car was hurled from the tracks and dove head-first into a telephone pole about 10feet away. That no one was killed is a miracle. News of the wreck spread like wildfire through the city at midnight, and hundreds of persons hurried to Eddystone to see the demolished car and debris.

75Years Ago – 1943: The first Friday-the-Thirteenth accident in Chester today took the life early this morning of a Sun Shipyard worker when he was crushed by a steel boom that struck him when a locomotive crane toppled over. At about 6:50this morning, a cable broke and when the 44-year-old attempted to dodge the scaffoldin­g being unloaded, he ran beneath the boom and was struck.

50Years Ago – 1968: “Triumph and Tragedy: The Story of the Kennedys” is as fantastic a book as it is frightenin­g. The Kennedy story has been put together by the Associated Press in a 256-page hard cover book with 130black and white photograph­s and two dozen in color. The book is offered by the Delaware County Daily Times for $2.75at its offices at 18 E. Eighth St., Chester, or 530Baltimo­re Pike, Springfiel­d. 25Years Ago – 1993: Class sizes in Chester High School will be limited to the low- to mid-30s this year, part of the effort to avoid a repeat of the 1992-93 school year, Superinten­dent JoAnn B. Manning said at her first community meeting since assuming the position last week. Last year, the opening of school was marked by chaos – some classes were crowded with 50students or more, some classrooms did not have enough furniture and many students were uncertain about their class schedules.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Two actions needed for the scheduled winter deer hunt on Swarthmore College property have been moved forward by borough council. The board approved an agreement between the borough and college and authorized advertisin­g an amendment to the ordinance regulating firearms. The college will secure insurance and agree to indemnify the borough from any incidents connected with the event.
