100 Years Ago – 1918: The street repairing work on East Broad Street (Ninth Street) is interesting even on these hot days. The steam roller, the plow that rips up the old asphalt and the various tar processes are full of suggestion to those engaged in others callings; while the workmen whose duties take them over the freshly tarred pebbles wear tar pasty shoes which gathers as they go.

75 Years Ago – 1943: The resignation of James B. Miller, chairman of the Delaware County Republican Executive Committee, “to take effect at once,” was read Thursday night by Mrs. Eleanor G. Evans, vice-chairman, at a special meeting held in the Masonic Temple, Chester. But Miller is still the official chairman of the organization because only 127 committeemen and women – 23 short of a quorum – turned out. “Is Heyburn

here” and “Is McClure here?” were the leading questions heard during the meeting. Neither Senator Heyburn nor John McClure attended. Heyburn, leader of the anti-McClure faction, was set to assume to control of the county party from the machine leader.

Robert Watkins, R-9 of Birmingham, warned the Delaware County Airport Authority that any request for federal money to build an airport in western Delaware County “will be opposed by every effort I can use in my office.” “You are going to wreck the western end of Delaware County… you are going to build hatred for everyone who lives out there,” he said.

25 Years Ago – 1993: One of the most dangerous intersections in Delaware County will soon be made a bit safer with the addition of a new turn signal. The Haverford Board of

Commissioners approved a leftturn signal for traffic on westbound Haverford Road at College Avenue. “There are as many as 10 to 12 accidents there a week,” said Tom Brophy, who lives very close to the intersection. “I have no lawn there now, it’s all glass.”

10 Years Ago – 2008: Tonight’s scheduled “Peace on the Streets Jam” had to be canceled after the headlining performer was arrested on drug and weapons charges last week, according to Chester officials. A popular rapper slated to appear at the show was allegedly arrested last Saturday in New York on charges of menacing, possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a weapon. “I think there should be consequences for people’s actions,” said Councilwoman Marrea Walker-Smith, who had been coordinating the public event.
