Smith signs with Bears, and gets right to work

-

Roquan Smith wore a smile on his face, and a Chicago Bears uniform for the first time since training camp started.

The Bears Tuesday got a first look at their first-round round draft pick 30 days after he was supposed to report with rookies for camp. Both sides quickly sought to put the stalemate in the past.

“It’s a great feeling just to be back out here with my teammates, getting back into rhythm,” Smith said. “So it’s an awesome feeling.”

Drafted by general manager Ryan Pace No. 8 overall, the Georgia linebacker had been the last unsigned pick of the 2018 NFL draft.

Smith settled on a fouryear contract that guarantees $18.5 million and includes an $11.5 million signing bonus, a person familiar with the talks told The Associated Press. The sticking point reportedly had been the agent’s insistence on protection for Smith regarding guaranteed money.

Barkley misses practice

ALLEN PARK, MICH. » Saquon Barkley stood and watched, for the most part, resting his strained left hamstring as the Giants practiced against the Detroit Lions Tuesday.

“He’s day to day,” Giants coach Pat Shurmur said.

Barkley, a rookie back drafted No. 2 overall, went through some drills very slowly before going to the sideline to work on his strength and conditioning. The former Penn State star was in uniform, minus shoulder pads, with his healthy teammates in the first of three practices with the Lions.

Bills GM backs McCoy

ATLANTA » Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy finalized eviction proceedings against his ex-girlfriend after reaching an agreement in Georgia Tuesday.

In the meantime, McCoy took his familiar spot with the starting lineup at training camp, where Bills general manager Brandon Beane said no evidence has come to light to alter the player’s status with the team amid allegations he severely disciplined his son and beat his dog.

“Nothing’s changed, and we see LeSean here for the future,” Beane told The Associated Press in the first public comments made by a team official since McCoy’s ex-girlfriend raised the allegations in a lawsuit filed on Friday.

“You take all allegations seriously, but until the police say there’s something there, we’re not going to act on anything without them saying there’s legit evidence,” Beane said. “It’s an open investigation. Nothing has come forward that said any of these things are true .... ”
