100 Years Ago – 1918:

Plans are being prepared or the constructi­on of 2,000 homes by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. It is understood on good authority that the work on the new operation will be started as soon as possible. It is rumored in real estate circles that the 172 acres of ground recently acquired by the Baldwin interests will be used.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

A county fair atmosphere is taking shape in the heart of industrial Chester today as Victory Garden harvest show committeem­en lay groundwork for the first annual presentati­on here on Friday. With interest in the show mounting steadily throughout Delaware County, the committee announced an extension of the deadline for entrees until Thursday night. The show will be given at the State Armory.

50 Years Ago – 1968:

Chester and Tinicum Island are among seven Delaware Valley sties considered feasible for major marine terminal developmen­t in a comprehens­ive Delaware River Port Study released today. Of 16 locations considered as possible sites for major developmen­t, only seven were feasible and studied in depth. They are Chester, Tinicum Island, New York Shipyard, Penrose Ferry, Hog Island, National Steel and Cherry Island.

25 Years Ago – 1993:

The cleanup of 18 radioactiv­e houses in eastern Delaware County could take as little as two years and as many as 36, depending upon which Lansdowne politician is doing the math. Republican Lansdowne council hopeful Mark DuFrayne thinks the job will be done by 1996. Delaware County Democratic Party Vice Chairman Joe Merlino warns the cleanup could take until 2029. The actual date probably lies somewhere in between, said an EPA official.

10 Years Ago – 2008: The National Liberty Museum has selected 37 young achievers and two student groups to receive its annual Commerce Bank Young Heroes Awards on Aug. 21. Currently in its eighth year, the award spotlights exceptiona­l young people who have excelled in classrooms, served in the community, overcome adversity and inspired others through their extraordin­ary deeds. Among these exceptiona­l individual­s are Delaware County nominees Mecca Lezer, 13, of Folcroft, a seventh grader at Delcroft School; Naala Johnson, 11, of Havertown, a fifth grader at Manoa Elementary School; and Joseph Michael Santos, 18, of Havertown, a junior at Devon Preparator­y School.
