Man fatally gunned down on Chester street

CHESTER » A man was fatally shot on a city street Monday morning, police said.

The victim has been identified as 31-year-old Everett Wilson. His death brings the city’s homicide toll this year to 14.

Chester police and Delaware County detectives are investigating the incident, which occurred just after 11 a.m. in the 900 block of Yarnall Street. Officers arrived to find a white Dodge Journey with the driver’s side window shattered, glass and numerous shell casings on the ground.

Wilson was sitting in the driver’s seat of the Dodge, which had New York plates and was parked in front of a doctor’s office. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Paramedics from Crozer-Chester Medical Center pronounced him dead at the scene.

“The call came in at 11:08, we have a male in his early 30s shot numerous times,” Chester Police Chief James Nolan IV said early in the investigation. “The victim was in a rental car. We have multiple officers and detectives tracking down leads. If members of the public have information we urge them to contact police.”

Officers could be seen knocking on doors along the quiet street just west of Ninth Street near the Commodore Barry Bridge overpass as residents gathered to watch the drama unfold. A family member who approached the scene shouting “that’s my son,” was restrained by police.

Nolan said there was the report of a suspect fleeing the scene, but police were still verifying his description. Officials do not yet have a motive to the shooting.

Asked about the numerous shootings in the city Nolan said police would like to see it stop but the shootings involve an organized crime element, which makes it difficult for police to track.

Nolan said the end of the summer often sees a spike in violence as people who have been away return to the city.

“It’s 11 a.m. on a Monday, who expects it?” said Nolan. “We’re working to increase the department, in fact were are holding interviews in September.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact city Detective Victor Heness at 610-447-8429 or vheness245@chesterpolice.org or county Detective Thomas Scarpato at 610-891-4708.
