100 Years Ago – 1918: Homemade jams and jellies are needed for the convalesce­nt soldiers at the Cape May Hospital, and a box for receiving the same is in readiness in Library Hall, Broad (Ninth) Street. The Emergency Aid is seeing and asking the women of this city to put aside at least one jar or preserves for the soldiers who willingly gave up health for the cause of democracy. The box will be in charge of Mrs. William Nelson.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Chief of Police George J. Feeney issued an order for all policemen to report to their captains at Second and Lloyd streets Monday night to take part in the Labor Day parade. Orders of the day call for full dress summer uniforms and white gloves.

The WAC hat, and lots of others, too! 50 Years Ago – 1968: Three area accountant­s have purchased a 22-acre golf course in Concord Township for $209,000 – making 1968 the year of the million-dollar land boom in the township. The Spring Lake Golf Club, on Route 202 near Smithbridg­e Road, at the lower end of the township, was purchased from Recreation Enterprise­s Inc. by the D.K.Y. Corp.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Sun Company has filed a tax assessment appeal that, if successful, would cut its 1994 contributi­on to Chichester School District in half. The 50.55 percent reduction would reduce the oil giant’s anticipate­d contributi­on of nearly $1.9 million to $927,000. The higher figure is reflected in the district’s 1993-94 budget, which included a 65mill tax increases. “It’s the single greatest assessment appeal that the district has been confronted with,’ district solicitor Arthur Levy said.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Chester police are stepping up their efforts to catch metal thieves who have been ripping the guts out of buildings throughout the city in recent weeks. “It’s a daily occurrence,” Detective Capt. Joseph Massi said. “They’re going into houses that are being worked on and they’re just tearing them up.” Last week, officers spotted a truck loaded with copper piping and gave chase. The truck was pursued into Delaware, where the occupants were arrested. “It’s a sign of the times,” Massi said.
