Robbers make off with $50K from check-cashing biz

- By the Times Staff

EAST LANSDOWNE » Police are on the hunt for a pair of armed robbers who made off with an estimated $50,000 from a check cashing business on Baltimore Pike.

Though the investigation into the Aug. 27 robbery at Baltimore Pike Check Cashing has been ongoing, authorities on Wednesday released images of the suspects captured on video and appealed to the public for help to identify them.

It was two minutes before 8 a.m. when two black men entered the business in the 900 block of Baltimore Avenue and immediately began questioning the cashier about cashing checks, Police Sgt. James Cadden said. The 37-yearold female clerk and the owner were the only people inside the store at the time, preparing for the start of the business day.

“Unfortunately, the safe was open,” Cadden said. “They start off with a lot and end with very little, given the nature of the business.”

Cadden said both men displayed semiautomatic firearms within 30 seconds of their entrance into the store, and both pointed their firearms at the clerk. Video shows the clerk behind an enclosure, and hurriedly walking to another office where the owner was standing by the unlocked safe, as one of the suspects follows her. The suspect, described as 18 to 22 years old, wearing all black and considered the leader by police was dubbed “Sticky Fingers” as video shows him grabbing handfuls of cash, and scooping bills dropped onto the floor with one hand as he held his gun in the other.

Both he and the second suspect fled the store, last seen running north on Beverly Avenue. The entire ordeal lasted a little over two minutes.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 610-259-2308 or 911.
