Nominations sought for first-ever Delco ‘House KEEPING’ awards
DARBY » Taking care of an older house is challenging but can be rewarding. To celebrate Delaware County’s wealth of solid older buildings in the first ring eastern part of the county, and the owners who take care of them with an eye to the future, the newly formed Eastern Delaware County Historic Preservation Partnership is launching its first annual “Good house KEEPING awards.” Any house built before 1918 is eligible. Nomination forms are available at DarbyHistory.com or at local libraries and must be received by October 1. Winners will be announced at the annual OcTrolleyFest event on October 13.
The Eastern Delaware County Historic Preservation Partnership (EDCHPP) is a committee of the 501(c)(3) Friends of the Blue Bell and is dedicated to “Improving local communities through cooperation, historic preservation, and advocacy. Frankie Valli tribute band to perform benefit concert
“Lights Out,” a tribute band replicating the sounds of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, will perform 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at The Phoenix Ballroom at Reliance Fire House, Mill Rd. and Chichester Ave., Upper Chichester to benefit the Upper Chichester Library. Lights Out has been called the #1 Frankie Valli Tribute in the country. Tickets are on sale now and cost $35. Newcomers & Neighbors to kick off new club year
Newcomers & Neighbors Club of Delaware County will kick off their club year Thurs., Sept. 19 at Azie Restaurant, 219 W. State Street, Media. All women of Delaware County are invited to join in the non-profit organization. Crozer-Keystone offers ‘Think Pink’ mammo screenings
Crozer-Keystone Health System will host “Think Pink” events, pairing mammography screenings with a free gift throughout the months of September and November at various Crozer-Keystone Health System locations. SEPTA Key Truck comes to Delco Courthouse Friday
Delaware County Transportation Management Association (DCTMA) is working closely with SEPTA to help register Delaware County commuters for the SEPTA Key Card. The SEPTA Key Truck will be on site at the Delaware County Courthouse at the corner of Front and Olive Sts., Media 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Friday, September 7. DCTMA, in collaboration with the Delaware County Planning Department, is coordinating a transportation fair that day, where county employees can purchase their Key Card right on site from the SEPTA Key Truck. Everyone who purchases a card will be entered to win a $20 Wawa gift card. SEPTA representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the new mode of payment, and show riders how to reload their cards for future fares. ABC Men will hold its eighth annual benefit dinner Saturday, Sept. 22 at Anthony’s Restaurant & Banquet Center, 4990 State Rd., Drexel Hill. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. for a “meet and greet” and dinner will be served at 7:15 p.m. This year’s dinner topic will focus on seniors and the disabled population and raise funds to support ABC Men, Inc., a nonprofit organization which provides free snow removal and other services to seniors and the disabled, as well as free transportation for medical appointments, food delivery, and more. Chichester Seniors to meet twice this month
The September meetings of the Upper Chichester Senior Citizens Club will be held on Thursdays, Sept. 6 and 20, at 1 p.m. at the Community Services Building, Market St., Linwood. Bingo is played before each meeting at 11:30 a.m. Any Chichester resident 60 years of age or older is welcome. Refreshments will be served.
St. Eugene to hold parish carnival
St. Eugene Parish Carnival, 200 S. Oak Ave., Primos, will host its parish carnival Wednesday, Sept. 26 through Saturday, Sept. 29 beginning at 6 p.m. each evening and 4 p.m. on Saturday. Rides, food and games for all ages will be available. Discounted advance tickets are being sold, with 20 tickets for $25 and each ticket is good for one ride. Annual book sale to take place at Haverford Twp. Library
The Friends of the Haverford Township Free Library will hold their 16th annual book sale September 28, 29, 30 and October 6, 7. The sale will feature thousands of volumes for sale across various genres of adult fiction and non-fiction and children’s books for various ages. Prices range from $1 to $2, with special books priced individually. CDs and DVDs will also be on sale. On Sept. 30 and Oct. 6 and 7, there will be a “Fill a bag for $8” sale. The all-volunteer Friends of the Haverford Township Free Library, founded in 2003, is a non-profit devoted to advocacy for the library and to raising funds for special library acquisitions, programs and services.
CASA Crawl set for end of month
Tickets for the 2018 CASA Crawl to benefit CASA will take place on State Street in Media 3-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. Cost is $30 in advance and $35 at the door which supports child advocacy and gives attendees access to food and drink specials, fun giveaways, a CASA t-shirt, and much more. Free ‘Playing for Change’ concert at Ridley Twp. Library
Local author and entertainer Vincent James will host a “Playing for Change” musical event at the Ridley Township Library 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. Joining James at the Ridley Township Library will be local performers Ray Naylor, Leigh Goldstein and others performing a mix of original and popular material. The event is free, familyfriendly and light refreshments will be served. Playing for Change Day is a global event to support music education and social action around the world. It began from a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. James performs songs from the 1960s to today and is co-author of the book series “88+ Ways Music Can Change Your Life,” featuring inspirational music stories from around the world including stories from over a dozen celebrities. Along with his wife Joann, he is also founder of the non-profit Keep Music Alive.
